Description
Job Summary:
Provides technical advice and support with respect to matters impacting occupational health and industrial hygiene issues for CSX Transportation (CSXT). Provides for the coordination, development, and maintenance of CSXT''s chemical control process, facility chemical inventory list, container labeling, and employee hazard communication training. Supports the CSXT employee exposure assessment, control of hazardous energies, and health and safety review programs to ensure and demonstrate full compliance with all government and company standards. Manages 3rd party contractor used to supply material safety data sheets (MSDSs) on demand at the request of an employee/employee representative, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), or Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
Primary Activities and Responsibilities:
* Manage the 3rd party vendor used to ensure an efficient and effective process for MSDS identification, database population, and deployment of the new web-based retrieval service.
* Manage for steady improvement in chemical control to comply with OSHA, FRA, and CSXT standards.
* Inspect facilities to assist in the development of site specific chemical inventories.
* Review and revise CSXT hazard communication and lockout/tagout programs and their associated training materials as necessary to ensure compliance with Federal requirements and current CSXT processes.
* Assist with the development of industrial hygiene monitoring plan, conduct monitoring activities, and provide technical guidance in the implementation of controls to minimize exposure to contaminants.
* Assist in the development of industrial hygiene policies/procedures and ensure requirements are effectively integrated into CSXT standard operating procedures.
* Participate in internal health and safety audits to verify compliance levels. Evaluate site health and safety systems, procedures, and processes and implement changes to maximize effectiveness.
* Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelors degree required in Industrial Hygiene or Safety Engineering
* 3 or more years of experience required in Industrial Hygiene or Worker Safety
Equivalent Minimum Qualifications:
* Masters degree required in Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, or Environmental Health
* 1 or more years of experience required in Industrial Hygiene or Worker Safety
Preferred Qualifications
In addition to meeting the above qualifications, any of the following are preferred:
* Masters degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, or Environmental Health
* 1 or more years of Industrial Hygiene or Worker Safety experience in the Transportation or Production industries
Knowledge and Skills:
* Knowledge of OSHA General Industry and Construction Standards (29 CFR 1910 and 1926)
* Knowledge of purchasing protocols
* Microsoft Office skills
* Project management knowledge and skills
* Knowledge of Industrial Hygiene principles
* Knowledge of Safety principles
* Training development and delivery skills
* Knowledge of CSX safety rules
* Public speaking skills for communicating effectively in front of groups comprised of peers and/or superiors
* Knowledge of hazardous materials management

Job Requirements:
* 25% travel required.
* Wear protective equipment such as welding shields, hard hat, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, work boots, safety vest, face shield, and safety glasses.
* Work hours may vary in length and schedule. Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek.
* Work hours may include on call 7 days a week, 24 hours per day, with extended periods of time away from home.
* Need to be available to report to work with two-hour advance notice.
* The applicant selected for this position may be required to successfully complete a background check and physical including a drug test. Passing results must be received prior to start date in new position.
Environmental Conditions:
* Work inside an office environment.
* Work outside in all weather conditions.
* Work in confined spaces.
* Work at elevated heights, in certain instances in excess of 100 feet.
* Work with equipment that intensifies the heat factor.
* Work with hazardous materials on an occasional basis.
