General Position Description:

Nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)- Nurses on this unit care for children with the following complex medical diagnoses: respiratory distress with or without mechanical ventilation, sepsis, multisystem/organ failure. The surgical diagnoses consist of the following: cardiac defects, trauma, spinal fusion, kidney, heart, lung or liver transplant. The patient to nurse ratio on this unit is typically 2:1 but can be 1:1. The PICU at Childrens Memorial Hospital is a major referral center for the greater Chicagoland area.

Job Responsibilities:

Performs responsibilities in five areas of nursing practice: clinician, teacher, researcher, leadership and professional development. Understands and integrates into the delivery of patient care the needs of neonatal, pediatric and adolescent patients in regards to their growth and development process. The position actively supports the Hospitals and departments Continuous Quality Improvement and customer service goals, individually and as an effective team member. Clinician behaviors include: assessment of documents, plan care and document goals appropriate for child and family. Maintain a safe environment, take direct and appropriate action to urgent situations. Preserve patient rights, reflect recognition of childs development level. Functions as a member of the healthcare team. Document patient discharge and evaluates patient and family response to plan of care. Teacher behaviors include: identify patient and family learning needs and abilities. Research behaviors: read research articles related to patient/family care topics or assist with collection of data. Leadership levels: adhere to communication, costumer service and professional image standards, actively work to build team member skills, identify resources available to assist in professional development.

Job Requirements:

Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois. Experience in a critical care setting preferred but not required. Pediatric experience also preferred. Ability to safely immobilize children if necessary and to assess and respond quickly to patient care situations. Ability to move equipment and patients. Ability to effectively communicate with patients/families, physicians and hospital staff.
