Toohig Fellowships - Accelerator Science & Engineering
The LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP) is pleased to announce postdoctoral research positions in accelerator science for recent PhDs in physics or engineering. These positions are explicitly for studies and activities concerning CERN''s Large Hadron Collider. The term of the Fellowship is two years, extendable to three - approximately half of which will be spent at CERN and the remainder at a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory involved in the LARP collaboration. LARP is a collaborative initiative of the U.S. DOE Office of Science, Division of High Energy Physics, and several national laboratories under the auspices of the DOE Office of Science. LARP''s mission is to study and improve the operation of the LHC by helping with commissioning activities, participating in research with the accelerator, and by developing instruments, magnets and other equipment to facilitate a luminosity upgrade. The laboratories presently engaged in LARP are Lawrence-Berkeley National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermilab and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The choice of resident laboratory for each Fellow will be negotiated and will depend on each individual''s chosen and approved research program. The present activities of LARP include accelerator instrumentation and diagnostics, advanced superconducting magnet R&D and beam-physics calculations and simulations. LARP scientists, engineers and postdoctoral research associates, including Toohig Fellows, will participate in the commissioning of equipment and beams for the LHC. Other activities will become part of the LARP mission as needs and resources permit. The Toohig Fellowships are in honor of the late Dr. Timothy Toohig, a physicist who devoted his life to promoting accelerator science and increasing understanding, communication and collaboration among scientists of all nations and religions. A recent PhD. degree, or its equivalent, in physics or engineering is required.
Please forward a CV and the names and addresses of three (3) references along with your covering letter to: Dr. Angelika Drees, Collider-Accelerator Department, Bldg. 911B, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY 11973 or by email: toohigfellowship@uslarp.org. Collider-Accelerator Department.
