This position provides world-class actuarial analysis in support of the industry-leading employee benefits that Microsoft provides. This position is part of the Business Management group within Global Benefits that provides finance, systems, and analytical support for Microsoft benefit programs both in the United States and internationally. Global Benefits is one function within the Compensation, Benefits and Performance Management (CBPM) center of excellence of Microsoft Human Resources. The incumbent will work in a highly-collaborative environment with the Global Benefits management team, including leaders of the Health, Wellness, and Productivity benefits, Life Stage benefits, and Global Retirement Services teams. The position will also partner closely with external actuaries and consultants and benefit plan providers and administrators.
The incumbent will perform complex actuarial analyses to support the design, implementation, and operation of health and welfare benefits programs, initially in the United States but ultimately expanding to encompass international programs as well. Activities include data extraction, actuarial and/or analytical model development and maintenance, preparation of statistical analyses, and production and review of regular and ad hoc reports. The incumbent will routinely present results and recommendations to key stakeholders up to and including the Corporate Vice President of CBPM.
Responsibilities
Provide regular analysis of health and welfare benefit plan experience. Review and analyze health plan claim experience, trends, utilization, and demographics. Monitor actual claim costs versus budget assumptions and provide analysis of variance to plan management and HR Finance. Review and analyze disability and life insurance program experience. Assist in development of ROI and other analysis of benefit programs.
Develop recommendations to management required for plan budgeting and operations. Recommend projected claim costs for fiscal year health plan budgeting. Determine flexible benefit plan credits, price tags, COBRA premiums, and domestic partner premiums.
Review projections and analysis provided by external actuaries, including health plan IBNR and Workers Compensation IBNR reserves. Assist Global Benefits Business Management finance staff and HR Finance as needed to ensure accurate accounting for reserves.
Deliver cost projections, risk analyses, and other analytical support to health, welfare, retirement, and global benefit programs in conjunction with annual processes and new and on-going projects. Participate as member of project teams in developing benefits strategy, creating new benefit programs, and designing modifications to existing programs.
Manage vendor relationships with external actuaries. Function as program manager for actuarial and consulting services: review contracts and Statements of Work for compliance with internal guidelines and policies; monitor and assess vendor performance and service levels; review pricing. Facilitate communications among external actuaries, internal partners (in particular HR Finance), and external auditors.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in mathematics, actuarial science, statistics, or computer science or equivalent experience.
Minimum four (4) years of experience in an actuarial department of a health plan, insurer, or actuarial consultant. Experience in the actuarial analysis of domestic (United States) health and welfare plans required; e.g., insurance pricing, provider contracting, financial reporting, reserving.
Demonstrated success in passing actuarial examinations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to successfully oversee and bring projects to completion. Outstanding attention to detail is required.
Ability to work both independently with minimal direction and collaboratively across multiple functions.
High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, in particular Excel and PowerPoint.
