Job Duties
APPLICATIONS ENGINEER (I-6) (Web Designer/Developer) Requires a bachelors degree or equivalent experience, preferably in Computer Science and 3+ years of recent experience as a web designer/developer. Ability to create cross-browser, cross-platform compatible, standards-based website designs using XHTML and CSS required. Experience with jQuery, and javascript and their use in interface design; experience with web application programming, preferably using classic ASP (or ability to learn ASP based on familiarity with comparable languages such as PHP); experience with using MS SQL or equivalent databases to present dynamic online content; solid grasp of search engine optimization techniques, usability testing methods and accessibility principles required. Experience with Flash, ActionScript a plus. Will work with a small, highly motivated team, this position is responsible for the design and maintenance of a broad spectrum of websites that support Brookhaven National Laboratorys overall online communications program - from the Labs intranet to the website for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Candidate will be responsible for maintenance of existing websites, design and creation of new websites based on internal customer specifications, design and/or integration of dynamic page elements into websites, regular content updates using the Laboratorys content management system, preparing images and graphics optimized for online distribution, and providing technical support to novice web authors.
