Documentation Auditor-Cardiology

Position Summary:
Educates physicians and other healthcare providers on appropriate medical documentation guidelines, coding of Evaluation and Management (E&M) services, testing and procedures. Coordinates billing efforts with Physician Billing Department.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Provides guidance and education to physicians and other care providers regarding medical documentation. Advises physicians on how to achieve best reimbursement from third party payors. Confers with physicians to highlight opportunities for improvement in documentation and code selection
2. Audits physicians’ selection of CPT and ICD-9 codes and medical record documentation supporting code selection. Works to correct inaccuracies and resolve discrepancies when identified.
3. Specifies codes for visit, procedures and diagnoses for inpatients, procedures and select outpatients visits.
4. Meets with Division Head, Clinical Practice Director, Administrative Director or designees on a regular basis to discuss problems and recommended solutions.
5. Performs monthly reconciliation between concurrent charges sent and entered.
6. Ensures all concurrent charges and necessary information are submitted to the billing service in a timely manner, which may require daily interactions with physician/nursing/technical staff.
7. Resolves all questions and problems with patients, third party payers, billing coordinators, coding and billing analysts and external billing services.
8. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.

Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist–Physician (CCS-P), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) required.
2. Previous clinical experience as registered nurse or technologist highly preferred, working in Cardiology program and working with physicians in an academic medical program.
3. Demonstrates and applies understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and coding classification systems in determining appropriate physician coding. Significant knowledge and experience with Cardiology coding as demonstrated by published articles or speaking experience at industry meetings highly preferred.
4. Thorough knowledge of CPT and ICD-9 coding.
5. Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively, work independently and balance multiple priorities.
6. Ability to use computer software (i.e.: Epic, IDX, WORD, EXCEL and PowerPoint).
