Requirements:  Registered nurse license in Pennsylvania
Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner license in Pennsylvania.
Certificate of Prescriptive Authority in Pennsylvania (upon hire).
National Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in area of education/subspecialty - Acute Care / Critical Care.
Masters degree from an accredited graduate school of nursing, in an acute/critical care pediatric nurse practitioner program.
Minimum of 2 years pediatric RN experience.
Ability to work in a team setting with multiple responsibilities.
Ability to use computer and electronic medical records effectively.
Advanced physical and psychosocial assessment skills for patients and families across all developmental levels
Critical analysis and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently
Ability to interpret laboratory and radiographic data
Ability to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
Ability to work collaboratively through consultation with other health care team providers
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English

Job Description:  The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the clinical evaluation and care of patients in the CICU-Cardiac Intensive Care Center.
The CICU NP directs the medical and surgical management of a caseload of acute and
chronically ill cardiology, cardiac surgery and transplant patients requiring intensive care
monitoring.
Clinical Responsibilities:
Role expectations include assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of all medical and surgical
complaints of assigned patients in consultation with the Collaborating physician or his/her
designee.
Participates in patient care rounds with the intradisciplinary team twice a day to discuss
patient care issues regarding assigned patients in the CICU.
Presents patient data based on physical examination findings and holistic evaluation of
patient and family.
Reviews patients current medical therapy, laboratory and diagnostic study and orders
necessary laboratory and diagnostic studies to assist in identifying the etiology of the chief
complaint.
Develops treatment plan that is evidence-based.
Evaluates patients response to plan of care and adjusts medical management as necessary
based on patients condition.
Serves as a liaison between patients/families and CICU nursing and medical staff.
Provides education to patients/families and staff.
Provides timely updates to patients and families.
Assist with the transport of patients to diagnostic tests or procedures which may include
providing conscious sedation and monitoring for tolerance of and recovery from sedation, test
and/or procedure.
Coordinates patient care conferences for patients and families.
Coordinates the transfer of the patient to another in-house unit or health care facility.
Coordinates patient discharges from the CICU which includes ensuring parental discharge
teaching is complete, necessary immunizations and auditory evaluations are done,
prescriptions are written, referring health care providers have been notified, information
regarding the hospitalizations has been faxed and follow-up appointments have been made.
Coordinates the admission of patients into the CICU and facilitates the plan of care in
conjunction with the collaborating physician or his/her designee. Responsibilities include
documenting the admission history, physical examination, and ordering appropriate
diagnostic studies, laboratory tests, and medical and surgical therapy.
Performs approved procedures in the CICU and Cardiology ward which include central line,
PICC, chest tube and pacing wire removal, phlebotomy, and arterial blood draws. Procedures
performed only in the CICU include: endotracheal and oral intubation, arterial line placement,
umbilical venous and arterial line placement, lumbar puncture, femoral line placement,
arterial blood draw, phlebotomy, conscious sedation, intracardiac line removal, and wound
debridement.
Updates CardioIMS and SCM on a daily basis.
Engages in phone triage in consultation with the primary cardiologist.
Participates in professional leadership activities including quality improvement, education and consultation to nursing staff and contributes to the planning, implementation and evaluation of APN standards of care and practice. Participates in the education and research activities of the team.
