APPOINTMENT: Academic Advisor. Twelve month position. Starting date is September 28, 2009.

QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to a diverse population. Illustrate superior written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Applicant must have skills related to public service or customer service experience (strong interpersonal skills). Computer proficiency applicable to the position. Professional travel is required including some nights and weekends.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to candidates holding Master’s degrees in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Communications, Psychology, or other similar fields who have previous experience in academic advising as well as experience with 2+2 articulation agreements and marketing skills. Veterans and military personnel with experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary function of this position is to serve as the academic advisor for students within the Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts Degree Program. This position requires the flexibility of working with enrolled students and pre-enrolled students via telephone, email, mail, and in person. This position will assist with marketing initiatives and coordinate community college partnership maintenance for the BOT/BA Degree program.
Advises between 300 and 500 enrolled students living throughout the United States with a special emphasis on military and fire fighters.
Advises prospective students in the Macomb office and in the traditional WIU service region.
Manages the community college agreements and partnership maintenance including monthly communications, promotional awareness, event participation, on-site programming, and any additional individual institutional requirements.
Speaks to prospective students at community colleges, military bases, fire stations, service clubs, and various industries. Arranges meetings with businesses in the recruiting area to determine educational needs of employees.
Assists the Director with marketing initiative and recruits students. Serve as point of contact to provide input to University newsletters including information for Alumni News & Notes, Rocke News, and Western News.
Assists and monitors students in all phases of the Prior Learning Portfolio process. Reviews Prior Learning Portfolios before submission to the Director of Non-Traditional Programs.
Responds to all advisees’ requests for information, including but not limited to questions concerning career exploration, graduation requirements, course selection, registration, proficiency exams, academic appeals, graduation, and graduate school admission.
Prepares and updates initial and all subsequent updated WARD Worksheets for advisees’ use.
Attends graduation activities and Discover Western programs. Regularly attends the BOT/BA Advisory Committee meetings and (on rotating basis with other BOT advisors) the Council of Academic Advisors meetings representing the BOT/BA degree.
Assists lead advisor in distance course selection utilizing computer programs and other appropriate research tools to determine courses necessary to best serve the needs of BOT/BA students.
Professional travel is required including some nights and weekends.
Assists in providing the campus community with information on the BOT/BA Degree.
Works with other offices/departments on campus to promote the BOT/BA Degree, alumni development, and to provide quality, continued service to BOT/BA students.
