Role Summary
An ESD Solution Architect is responsible for ensuring the existence of a holistic solution for a given project or effort. This typically results in artifacts describing the ¿blueprint¿ against which the project is executed, i.e. the applications, systems, integration points, processes, and infrastructure involved in (or impacted by) the solution.
The Solution Architect must ensure the solution is understood and can be carried-out by the teams who must deliver its contents. This includes identifying the appropriate teams and their role in delivering the solution, as well as resolving their questions, issues, and concerns regarding the solution. Moreover, the Solution Architect makes certain the solution takes into account the guidelines, constraints, and overall strategic direction set by Enterprise Architecture, Security (CIP), and Infrastructure planning (IT Ops). This aspect of the role requires the Architect to know when and how to engage those teams, to collaborate with the teams in order to formulate a solution, and - when needed - to undergo the various review processes imposed by those teams.
The role differs from that of Enterprise Architect in its level of project involvement. Whereas Enterprise Architects are primarily concerned with setting strategies, Solution Architects apply strategies to projects. Solution Architects often must weigh strategic direction against time and budget constraints to arrive at the best possible solution for a project. Moreover, Solution Architects are involved in all phases of the project lifecycle, from project inception (setting of an approach) through testing and implementation. They are advisors to the project managers, contributors to requirements, overseers of design, and responders to issues arising from testing and production support. Often, they serve as representatives of the project and its solution to various stakeholders, business partners, and senior leadership.
A Solution Architect Manager is expert in the above-described qualities and exemplifies these qualities to others. He is capable of leading a small team of Solution Architects within a particular project, acting as team leader and point-of-contact to the project team. Solution Architecture Managers must be capable of contributing to the project planning process, and advises project managers regarding scoping issues, risks to plan, and general plan structure. Finally, a Solution Architect Manager advises business partners regarding solution options, often helping to shape scope in the process.
The ESD Solution Architecture team supports the projects and programs executed by the Enterprise Solution Delivery (ESD) organization. ESD is tasked with delivering challenging projects which typically have more than one of the following characteristics: large budget and number of resources, complex, highly-visible, and multi-year. Projects and programs managed by ESD deal in all aspects of CIGNA''s business (Healthcare, Group, International), and range from delivery of new product capabilities to identifying and recommending improvements to CIGNA''s technical infrastructure.
Responsibilities
The ESD Solution Architecture Manager is responsible for translating business capability definitions, business requirements, and conceptual reference architectures into holistic end-to-end integrated solution architecture deliverables for a set of business capabilities or projects across multiple ESD-managed programs. The Solution Architecture Manager supports the Solution Architecture function for ESD on assigned ESD-managed programs and supports large, complex, and visible ESD-managed initiatives. Solution Architecture Leads focus on critical path solution architecture deliverables and integration design items with broad dependencies and impacts. Solution Architecture Leads coordinate and collaborate with the architecture, requirements, and CIGNA and vendor development teams to formulate and author program-level solution architectures to drive application or component-level system functional specifications and detailed design specifications.
