General Summary
The Merchant is responsible and accountable for executing the merchandising strategy for his/her assigned categories.
The Merchant partners with other functional areas of the company to drive the business in his/her assigned categories including Supply Chain, Marketing, Visual Merchandising, Operations, and Store Planning.  
Job Responsibilities
1) Assumes full ownership of and accountability for assigned categories to include the following:
Delivering upon financial metrics of agreed upon plan
Establishing and managing product assortments
Selecting, managing and rationalizing vendors
Implementing pricing strategy including promotional and markdown strategy
Understanding the impact of his/her decisions on other business groups in the company
2) In partnership with the Merchandise Manager, develops strategic plan for assigned categories using a solid understanding of the industry trends, competitive landscape, business strengths and customer preferences.
3) Coordinates communication between merchandising, customers and all other business groups within the company:
Writes and distributes all memoranda to ensure consistency with company standards
Handles customer inquiries regarding products and ensures a response is provided in a timely manner
Regularly communicates with counterparts in other business groups across the company (including Eyes and Ears Store Managers) to align teams
4) Makes two market visits/month (OSH store visits, competition visits, vendor field visits, etc.) to understand market trends, customers and stores needs.
5) Demonstrates initiative by building consensus and partners with Supply Chain, Marketing, and other business groups within the company to execute strategy and to achieve established goals. Comfortable working with all levels of the organization.
6) A successful Merchant:
understands when to escalate/delegate issues to achieve desired results
pays attention to detail to ensure progress
adheres to Merchandising core values and serves are a role model for others in the company
7) Prior experience buying outdoor power equipment and/or garden tools and accessories is a plus.Orchard Supply Hardware offers a competitive benefits package that includes medical and dental coverage, 401(k) savings plan, paid vacation and holidays and associate discount.Education  Four-year college degree or equivalent retail experience required.
Experience  Minimum of three to five years experience in a retail or purchasing position
Proven experience selecting merchandise, negotiating products and pricing
Skills  Enthusiasm, initiative and a passion for retail
Well-versed in retail math and inventory planning concepts; understands the drivers of a retail P&L
Strong analytical skills
Outstanding negotiation skills
Proficient with MS Office Suite with advanced Excel skills
Superior interpersonal skills; excellent written, listening, verbal and non-verbal communication skills with all levels of the organization
Excellent organizational and planning skills; emphasis on attention to detail
 Strong presentation skills
Strong customer focus
Results oriented; ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines
Strong knowledge of retail planning, allocation, floor layouts/visuals and market awareness
