Our location in Columbus, OH, currently has an opportunity for a Program Manager/Strategic Programs. Responsible for working externally to develop and implement key business partnerships with government and non-government organizations (NGOs), standardization bodies, and experts to build Abbott's reputation as a global leader in analytical science and drive harmonization of internationally recognized test methods and standards in key markets. Also, responsible for working internally to develop strategies for aligning laboratory assets and test methods with business priorities, gaining alignment with division and corporate stakeholders, and executing to assure measurable outcomes are met.


The Program Manager - Strategic Programs R&D manages all aspects of technical external engagement activities for the Global Analytical and Food Safety group. She/he will manage key partnerships and communications with external organizations such as trade associations, peer companies, standards-setting organizations (e.g. AOAC International; ISO; CODEX), and key technical institutes and regulatory agencies. She/he will also act as primary coordination interface with internal functional partners such as R&D, Regulatory, Abbott Government Affairs, Corporate Social Responsibility, etc. to align external activities with business priorities. She/he will also lead an internal program for test method lifecycle management process that integrates laboratory assets and capital planning to ensure alignment between global QA/R&D analytical laboratories.

  • Plan and execute critical technical external engagement activities:
    • Manage out-of-pocket budget and reconciles variances monthly
    • Manage aspects of purchasing and contracts processes and vendor relationships
    • Manage relationships with key external partners
    • Represents Abbott in external meetings and forums and takes active role in shaping outcomes
    • Solicit input from team members to inform strategies and consults with subject matter experts as needed
    • Lead monthly internal forum to ensure alignment on external activities; holds team members accountable for updates
    • Attend and actively participates in external analytical chemistry and food safety meetings that align with engagement strategies; coordinates and plans attendance and coverage by team members
    • Represent department on functional steering committees and monthly forums
    • Work closely with colleagues outside the US to develop and implement strategies for laboratory capacity building and test method harmonization in key overseas markets
  • Plan and executes test method lifecycle management process that integrates laboratory asset management and capital planning:
    • Work closely with QA and R&D to track and update a database of laboratory assets across global analytical laboratories and develop strategic alignment with capital plan
    • Solicit and prioritizes capital requests from R&D annually; works closely with R&D and Capital Business Office on approval and execution of capital requests
    • Develop long-term strategic roadmap to align capital plan with laboratory asset needs and business priorities, and manages associated projects
    • Work closely with QA and R&D to govern global test methods from inception to retirement, including coordinating steering committee, managing updates to SharePoint site, and communicating updates regularly


  • Bachelor's degree in Science, preferably in chemistry or food chemistry; Master's or PhD degree in chemistry or food chemistry preferred


  • 10+ years of experience in the nutrition industry
  • Strong program management, organizational, planning, and follow up skills; ability to hold others accountable
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization and manage internal and external stakeholders
  • Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner
  • Ability to travel approximately 15-20%, including internationally

  • Background in analytical chemistry or microbiology
  • Experience developing and validating analytical or microbiological methods
  • Familiarity with AOAC International and/or ISO
  • Experience creating and delivering executive presentations
  • Ability to set strategy and vision and align external roadmaps w/ organization's business priorities
  • Ability to negotiate and influence outcomes from position of little or no authority
