Our location in Santa Clara, California currently has an opportunity for a Director Software Engineering.


The Director of Software Engineering within Abbott Hematology will support and further develop a complex electromechanical Hematology system development program. Directly responsible for the planning and execution of software research, development, and support. Responsible for leadership and management of software development and software test personnel. Assures compliance of all software and software-related activities with Abbott, government, quality and regulatory standards, policies and procedures. Understands and integrates multiple R&D and software disciplines and integrates them to create comprehensive software solutions. Responsible for product definition and product design including architecture definition. Responsible for software, integration, and testing. Responsible for collaborating with OEM partners and Technical Support to transfer and support products. Partners with Marketing, Medical Affairs, Clinical, Regulatory, Operations, and Quality to insure program success.
  • Responsible for the leadership and management of the research, development and technology transfer of software solutions for responsible development programs, including the development and integration of software products that meet the needs of the company's customers, provide the company with significant competitive differentiation against competitive companies, and support the revenue growth requirements of the business.
  • Provides leadership for R&D software team via the development and implementation of a comprehensive software design, development and validation methodologies.
  • Conceives plans, executes and tracks the program/projects and resources to meet strategic business while accommodating unforeseen events with timely and sound risk assessments and contingency plans.
  • Responsible for internal development programs as well as OEM/Co-Development programs in accordance with the quality system including quality policy, design control, CAPA and management oversight.
  • Interacts with executive and senior level management to reach agreements regarding significant program strategies, marketing pre-launch strategies, and funding and trade-offs.
  • Coordinates with Worldwide Marketing, Clinical Research, and Operations to integrate program/project goals with commercial, regulatory and manufacturing goals.
  • Directs the work of a broad range of technical and support personnel, draws on technical expertise within and outside of Abbott.
  • Coaches and mentors team members across multiple, diverse projects on performance and development needs.


  • Bachelor's Degree - Required (life science / software / engineering background )
  • Minimum 10 years related experience including 2+ years experience in people management.
  • Experience developing and launching complex, multi-functional systems that conform to industry quality and regulatory standards.
  • Experience in setting and achieving business driven strategies and managing resources to plan.
  • Ability to quickly analyze and make decisions regarding key technical decisions impacting system performance / commercial viability.

  • Prior software development leadership experience in a regulated environment.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in understanding of design controls, change management and CAPA.
  • Willing and able to further develop the maturity of the internal software development process.
