W e are seeking a dynamic, innovative and collaborative leader to serve as Director of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) for the Ship Repair business unit within BAE Systems, Inc. The SHE Director will provide strategic and tactical leadership for a geographically dispersed business unit comprised of 4,000 employees responsible for performing significant industrial work in support of the U.S Navy across four sites (Norfolk, VA; Jacksonville, FL; San Diego, CA; and Pearl Harbor, HI). You will lead a team of SHE subject matter experts with diverse backgrounds. This position, located in Norfolk, Virginia, reports directly to the Vice President and General Manager of Ship Repair and you will work closely with senior leadership to provide value-added solutions and support.

The successful candidate:
  • Is a seasoned SHE professional with demonstrated success in increasing challenging SHE roles and fully capable of leading an inclusive and large SHE organization.
  • Has the ability to influence in a dynamic environment and respond to changing internal and external customer demands and SHE risks.
  • Possess strong communication and presentation skills to facilitate effective communication at all levels of the organization and across multiple cultures.
  • Needs to be a hands-on and willing to take responsibility for resolving technical challenges, ensuring successful tactical execution, as well as creating and implementing the strategic vision.
  • A visible leader who takes a kind and collaborative approach with others and comes across as approachable.
  • Connects well with individuals at all levels of the organization, builds appropriate rapport, constructive and effective relationships.
  • Provides strategic direction, supervision, and guidance to ensure alignment with SHE policy, strategic objectives and organization goals that drive to zero incident plans and strategy.
  • Develops SHE staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training/developing team.
  • Manages compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and established company standards, to minimize risk to employees and liability to the business.
  • Leads integrated senior management teams to determine strategy and tactical deployment, improve performance, lower costs, and generate innovative solutions.
  • Recommends corrective actions, dispositions, process optimization and modifications.
  • Organizational skills - can marshal resources to get things done, orchestrate multiple activities at once to accomplish a goal, use resources effectively and efficiently, and arrange information in a useful manner.
  • Exhibits a high degree of technical credibility and communicates highly technical information in a simplistic and easily understandable way.
  • Develops and implements cutting-edge strategies for creating, sustaining and evolving a safety culture.
  • Interfaces with senior executive leaders, lead cultural, and behavioral change, develop and implement complex safety programs, and leverage industry programs and benchmark practices.
  • Provides oversight of day-to-day safety, environmental, and risk management including collaboration with site operations executives, alignment of goals, objectives, standards and best practices across departments, removal of barriers, leveraging of resources, and consistency in safety communications.

•Minimum of 12 years progressive leadership experience in safety with a strong knowledge of OSHA regulations
•Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering or related field
•Proven ability to develop strategies and drive financial results as it relates to implementation of safety practices, initiatives, and programs
•Proven record of influencing key decision makers at an executive level regarding safety strategies
•Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to define a clear vision, motivate others in a positive way to achieve desired results and develop a successful team
•Proven integrator that uses synergistic approach to problem solving, analysis, metrics and prevention
Knowledge and experience with OHSAS 18001 Safety Management System including conducting internal audits to ensure compliance
•Proactive communicator and relater who can interface effectively at all levels in the company and can appropriately influence business results through negotiation, persuasion and personal presence
•Proven record of savvy business judgment along with the mental agility and flexibility required in a dynamic company
•Demonstrated strong consultative and influencing skills with proven ability to resolve conflicts and diffuse difficult situations
•Self-driven and resourceful professional with the ability to solve problems outside area of expertise
•Demonstrated ability to leverage analytics and identify trends
•Proven ability to benchmark both internally and externally to achieve best practices
•Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced multi-cultural environment with minimal direction

•Possess unquestioned ethics and integrity
•Willingness and flexibility for domestic and occasional international travel

•Proven success reducing incident rates and improving the safety culture
•Proven experience interfacing with regulatory agencies
•Certifications: CSHO, CSP, CESCO, or REM
•International experience
•Master's Degree in Occupational Safety or Safety Engineering and/or MBA
Experience in managing a VPP program for an industrial site
