The Virology group at the US Research and Development Center, GSK Vaccines, is responsible for identifying and designing the target antigens for vaccine candidates, developing assays to evaluate vaccine efficacy, e.g. reverse genetics systems and neutralization assays, and understanding the interactions between viruses and innate immune responses.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a proven record in utilizing the most up to date bioinformatics tools to identify the best candidate antigens, to provide expertise in vaccine development for GSK projects.

  • To provide expertise in the areas of Virology and Immunology to guide the selection of new target antigens for vaccine design.
  • Identify and implement the most current bioinformatics tools to design new candidate antigens for both antibody and T cell responses.
  • Design and implement new technologies in the areas of reverse genetics and virology assays to evaluate vaccine candidates.
  • Provide Virology expertise to GSK Vaccine projects.
  • Provide effective and inspiring leadership with an enterprise mindset, ensuring support to professional development and qualification of staff.
  • Ensure the team use cutting edge technologies and ideas to deliver best preclinical expertise to GSK vaccine projects in discovery, development, and life cycle management.
  • Ensure that the objectives of the team are aligned with R&D and business priorities and team activities are designed and delivered according to project needs.
  • Takes full accountability of management tasks for the team and meet data integrity and quality expectations.
  • Ensures the team delivering assigned activities in the most efficient and resource conscious manner; drives innovation to establish technology in the lab to enhance data quality and resource utilization.
  • Possesses strong scientific leadership to enable collaboration with key scientific internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in IP and regulatory filings and publishes in peer reviewed journals
  • Manage a team of 5-10 scientists.
  • Supervise PhD students and postdoctoral fellows as needed.
  • Accountable for the management monitoring of the laboratory, ensuring that compliance with the GSK Environment, Health and Safety standards are an integral part of the operations and culture

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
  • PhD degree in life sciences with at least 10 years of experience in a related biotechnology field.
  • Knowledgeable in the fields of Virology, Innate Immunity, and viral interactions with the host.
  • Experienced in viral antigen identification and design for vaccines.
  • Knowledgeable in the latest bioinformatics tools to identify and design antigens, both for antibody responses and identifying T cell targets.
  • Experienced in sequence alignments of viral genomes utilizing various public databases.
  • Strong track-record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Fluency in English, spoken and written.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • Prior experience with RNA viruses or viral vector-based vaccine platforms is preferred.
  • Experienced in the development of reverse genetics systems and the development of virology assays for vaccine candidate evaluation.
  • Advanced training (e.g. post-doc) and demonstrated ability of managing a team to drive projects.
  • Among 7 years of job experience, at least 5 years are in vaccine/pharmaceutical industry.
  • Knowledge of GSK Vaccines strategy and objectives, regulatory requirements, and competition intelligence and intellectual property aspects. Ability to integrate this knowledge in decisions and recommendations.
  • People management and communication skills. Need to appropriately manage the interfaces with Scientific Leaders for projects as well as with Preclinical, Technical Development, Clinical, Regulatory, Medical Affairs, Global Patents, Legal, Business Development.
  • Able to efficiently manage uncertainty, changes in priority and timeline restrictions.
  • Able to deliver accurate and credible scientific communication outside GSK (e.g., peer reviewed publications, conference presentations, and contacts with other stakeholders).
