Under the supervision of a salaried supervisor, performs primary tasks associated with metal cutting and welding using oxy-acetylene, electric arc and heli-arc techniques and equipment including all other duties associated with welding in maintenance repair and installation work. Is also expected to perform secondary tasks in a related craft e.g. pipefitter, millwright, etc.
  • Receives both oral and written instructions from an Advisor or other member of the team regarding work schedules and jobs to be completed. Written instructions are in the form of work orders, job plans and drawings and sketches describing the work to be performed.
  • Executes the physical work associated with cutting various shapes of metals to required dimensions and heating to proper temperatures for bending and shaping, exercising care not to overheat and burn the metals. Also cools metals by water quenching or by air cooling as required. Does oxy-acetylene, electric arc and heli-arc welding using the procedure and methods best suited to the metal's involved.
  • Makes up and welds according to instructions, different designs of piping, pipe and tubing coils, heat exchangers, tanks, vessels, etc. from carbon steel, aluminum and all types of stainless steels. Also does miscellaneous layout work when fabricating from sketches and drawings.
  • Prepares a list of material for each job and requisitions the required material from Mechanical Stores.
  • Does both shop and field welding on pipe lines, vessels and machine parts prepared by others. Cleans the slag by chipping and wire brushing from all arc welded intermediate and finished beads.
  • Repairs by welding miscellaneous pumps, drive tanks, machine parts, pipe lines, etc.
  • Disposes of all scrap metals and discarded parts by separating and depositing in scrap metal collection areas as appropriate.
  • Handles carbon steel, stainless steel and cast iron electrodes, aluminum, brass, cast iron, carbon steel and stainless steel welding rods, piping, tubing, angles, channels and other forms.
  • Uses acetylene, oxygen, compressed air, etc. carefully to prevent damage and avoid injury to self and others.
  • Tools and equipment include electric arc and oxy-acetylene welding equipment, welding benches and tables, vises, stationary and portable electric drilling and grinding equipment, power and hand hack saws, chisels, wrenches, tongs, hammers, etc.
  • Serves as a guidance mechanic to trainees for on-the-job training lessons and functions as appropriate.

Education Minimum Requirement:
  • High School Diploma- Completion of a nationally qualified welding apprenticeship program resulting in a journeyman card, or college/technical school degree in welding with a minimum of three years hands-on experience is required.

Required Experience and Skills:
  • Incumbents should have solid work experience with an emphasis on processing/industrial operations, the ability to multi-task, basic computer skills and excellent communication, leadership, math, and problem solving skills.
  • In addition, demonstrated flexibility within a team environment with a focus on continuous improvement is also required in this position.

Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Post-secondary education (from a technical-institution or college) in a science or business discipline is preferred
  • Four years field experience as part of a qualified welding apprenticeship program or three plus years' experience working in welding field is preferred.
