Job Description

Newport News Shipbuilding seeks an experienced and motivated software engineer to join other developers as part of the department Networks, Communications, and Automation organization. The department software engineering organization supports distributed control systems designed, developed, installed and maintained for United States Navy aircraft carriers. As a software engineer, you will work alongside and collaborate with other engineering disciplines to evaluate, generate, unit test, and deliver software compliant with customer design, performance, and operational requirements.

Designs, develops, documents, tests and debugs applications software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions. Conducts multidisciplinary research and collaborates with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software. Determines computer user needs; analyzes system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls; prepares operating instructions; designs and develops compilers and assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems. Ensures software standards are met.

Demonstration of software architecture development and maintenance required.
• Experience with C++ and/or Java required.
• Experience with C, C#, .NET, and Visual Basic preferred
• Experience with software design (CASE) toolsets such as UML preferred.
• Understanding of networking and communication protocols (SPI, I2C, USB, RS232, RS485, TCP/IP, Ethernet IP (CIP), Multicast) preferred.
• Experience with real time embedded system using C/C++ and Real-time Operating Systems (RTOS) beneficial.
• Applied knowledge of Software Development Life Cycles, both traditional (waterfall, iterative, spiral), and agile experience required.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
• Strong attention to software development best practices required.
• Self-motivated & able to prioritize and lead with limited oversight.
• High degree of organizational skills and attention to detail required.
