The Director, Global Quality (GQ) Communications, will support the development and implementation of communications strategies, plans, and tactics for the global quality organization of Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS). This includes a heavy emphasis on driving and coordinating Quality communications across BMS including executive communications support for the chief quality officer directly, and for other members of the global quality leadership team where appropriate. The position works closely with the Corporate Communications and Media Relations team for any activity that will require external communications.

The position requires a strong communications and change management professional who demonstrates sound business judgment, a sense of urgency, and is comfortable working with senior & executive level leadership. Must be able to successfully work in a dynamic and changeable matrix organization, manage and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and stakeholders, lead cross-functional and cross-divisional teams. The individual must possess the ability to think strategically and execute tactically. The position will report to the Executive Director, Quality Strategy & Business Operations and will be located in Central New Jersey.


The high-level scope of the responsibilities of the Dir GQ Communications is:

  • Co-ordinates and integrates the execution of communications for the Company Quality strategy (and related portfolio of quality and compliance programs, including the annual quality plan).
  • Provide executive communication advice and support to the senior vice president, GQ / chief quality officer for BMS.
  • Execute executive level communication development from global quality to the BMS Board or Directors, BMS Leadership Team & Chief Executive Officer, and with external regulators.
  • Develop overall GQ organization internal communications strategy, messaging and plan for implementation.
  • Recommend and develop creative and imaginative internal communications that drive global quality employee engagement.
  • Partnering on shaping an employee engagement and cultural change strategy for the GQ organization to drive high performance among employees to execute the company’s mission, vision, strategic priorities and culture in the work they do every day.
  • The role will work closely with the Director of GPS Communications who will act as the matrix partner for the GQ Communications Leader.

This position will take the lead with cross-functional teams globally to create and execute communications. To be successful the individual needs to be a manager of change & people and also adept at working in a highly matrixed organization and will require both strategic vision and significant day to day tactical execution.


The successful candidate will be a self-motivated leader with a track record of setting, driving and delivering against integrated communications strategies. S/he will have expertise in strategic planning, issues management, internal and external communications, including executive communications, preferably with experience in Manufacturing communications. S/he must be able to collaborate with business leaders and teams to develop integrated communications strategies and have demonstrated ability to successfully lead and influence others. Finally, this individual will have a strong grasp of storytelling that can engage and energize employees and support the company’s quality priorities and business objectives.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, etc:

  • Ability to manage through change, build strong/trusting relationships, lead large/complex programs, and work across divisions, diverse business backgrounds and cultures.
  • Proven experience driving communications strategy in coordination with business partners in support of enterprise priorities.
  • Experience working with media and serving as a corporate spokesperson.
  • Exceptional collaboration skills with the ability to partner effectively within the department and across the business to drive and scale communications strategies across the enterprise.
  • Strong management and team leadership skills, including willingness to mentor others.
  • Superior written and interpersonal communications skills. Strong presentation and facilitation skills; ability to engage with and persuade a wide variety of audiences.

Education/Experience/ Licenses/Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, ideally in Communications or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Accomplished communications professional with a minimum 10 years experience in corporate communications, manufacturing communications, public relations agency or related field. Healthcare experience and solid understanding of the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry required.
