Job Description

NYT Cooking is looking for a Product Designer to execute the vision, user experience, and visual design of brand new tools and features for our product. Your priority for this year will be to transform our internal tools with a new, cohesive system through which our editors can publish and manage our content.

From getting to know the ins-and-outs of the lifecycle of a recipe to testing low-fidelity flows directly with editors, you'll balance solving acute publishing pain points with striving for future flexibility. You'll work with product, technology, editorial, and data partners as a small team to launch an MVP content management system that matches the expertise and ambitions of New York Times editors.

Your work will help our team not only enrich people's lives by making them better, more confident cooks, but also champion the notion that high-quality recipes and instruction are worth paying for.

You will report to Cooking's Product Design Director. This position is based in New York or remotely in the U.S.

Responsibilities
  • Support high-level product strategy, ensuring we're asking the right questions and solving for distinct needs.
  • Create documentation (e.g. user journeys, experience maps, wireframes, frameworks) to facilitate conversations, build consensus, and help make decisions.
  • Take product ideas and hone them into multiple solutions and concrete approaches, then collaboratively narrow ideas and establish requirements.
  • Create artifacts for user testing, and apply any insights to your designs. In the case of our CMS work, conduct informal testing with our editors to develop and iterate on your ideas.
  • Create production-ready design deliverables that use existing or new patterns as needed.
  • Collaborate with engineers to assure the visual quality of our output. Use browser developer tools to fine-tune user interface elements.
  • Contribute to team and product design rituals. Represent design in recruiting and interviewing for the broader team.


Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience designing digital web products, with recent experience designing interactive products or tools.
  • A portfolio of work that showcases your process and a range of fidelity levels along with finished design work. Applications without portfolios will not be considered.
  • Proficiency in Figma, Sketch, or equivalent design tools.
  • A shown understanding of modern HTML & CSS and grasp of current development philosophies / methodologies for building consumer products.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent visual and typographic sensibility. You make visual choices that respect platform and interaction conventions while expressing brand guidelines. You've iterated on designs based on usage patterns, user feedback, and an evolving competitive landscape.
  • Experience defining navigation systems and taxonomies, and writing copy that addresses specific audiences and their needs at a given point in time.
  • Experience collaborating closely with product managers and engineers. Comfortable working with remote teammates. (If applying as a remote candidate, experience working remotely in a previous design role is preferred.)
  • An interest in food / cooking and enthusiasm for The New York Times' mission.
