Job Description:

Our Civil Group offers an array of exciting career opportunities for the best IT, energy, logistics and engineering professionals.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF's Office of Polar Program's Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:
  • Vision: Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.
  • Mission: To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines. The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

**This position can be performed currently from a remote location in the U.S., but will require presence in the Washington, DC metro area (Alexandria, VA) in the future.**

The Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) Science Planners are part of the Science and Technical Project Services (S&TPS) functional area within Science and Area Management. S&TPS oversees the logistical planning and implementation of science projects that receive support from the U.S. government to conduct research in Antarctica. The Science Planners are the primary ASC interface with the National Science Foundation (NSF) for an assigned portfolio of science projects.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Review Antarctic science proposals for operational requirements in conjunction with NSF Office of Polar Program's Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics (AIL) and Antarctic Science Section (ANT) to make preliminary determinations of the appropriate level and method of logistical support.
  • Write agreement level document that outlines logistical support necessary to meet science objectives. This involves discussions with scientists while providing expertise to define science support requirements through the life cycle of the project. Lead review of document with all relevant NSF and ASC stakeholders to ensure that expectations can be met.
  • Coordinate closely with NSF AIL Managers, NSF ANT Program Officers, S&TPS stakeholders, and cross-functional areas for seamless science support. Through the evolution of the science event the Planner manages or assists in support execution and modifies resource requirements and schedules.
  • Allocate out-year logistical resources, such as research vessel, helicopter, and aircraft schedules. Develop long-range strategic plans for efficient use of limited resources.
  • Develop standard practices for analyzing and interpreting data to ensure accuracy and integrity in all reports that are created and disseminated.
  • Develop and present science support scenarios to NSF to inform logistical support decisions.
  • Ensure that S&TPS support meets contract obligations in a manner that meets or exceeds the customer's needs and expectations.
  • Ensure that S&TPS support activities are performed in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, standards and codes imposed by the Antarctic Treaty and the U.S. Government.
  • Ensures safety is the highest priority and responsible for maintaining a safe workplace.
  • Manage complex tasks under tight budget and time constraints.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in a related science or technical discipline; or equivalent experience/combined education, with 4 years of professional experience; or a Master's degree in related discipline with 2 years of professional experience.
  • Familiar with the conduct of field science and with the science questions addressed with field work.
  • Ability to review and understand scientific proposals.
  • Ability to interact with National Science Foundation, research scientists, military and other agency officials in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Strong organizational and communications skills.
  • Able to adapt to changing schedules and priorities.
  • Must be a strong team player.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, including familiarity with SharePoint.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior USAP or other field research or project management experience involving the physical or biological sciences, OR other experience planning science support in remote environments.
  • Data analytics and visualization experience.
  • Solid foundation in business fundamentals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position may require short duration deployment to Antarctica for site visits or special project support, but will be primarily based in the Washington, DC metro area (Alexandria, VA). In order to deploy to Antarctica, the employee will need to pass physical, dental and (for winter deployment) psychological examination as required by NSF.
