Summary

Note: Location is 1410 Lamberton Road, Hamilton, NJ 08611. This position is within our Mobile Workforce Group and reporting location can be changed to support business needs.

Perform work required in the construction, operation and maintenance of the underground transmission and distribution plant. Perform Miscellaneous Mechanic work required in the installation, repair and maintenance of building grounds, structures and equipment as qualified through on-the-job training. Install, remove, change and read single phase or network meters up to a maximum of eight at any single location (other than a water heater or demand meter) in connection with the installation, energizing, replacement and removal of an underground service. Perform other similar or less skilled work of the occupational group.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES
  • As the employee becomes qualified through acquired experience and training performs work required in the construction, operation and maintenance of the underground transmission and distribution plant except for those specific duties designated to the Chief Underground Technician or Chief Division Mechanic.
  • Performs Miscellaneous Mechanic work required in the installation, repair and maintenance of building grounds, structures and equipment as qualified through on the job training. In addition, performs the following special duties:
  • Under supervision, make splices on circuits operating at a voltage higher than 26 kv and make "Y" splices on 26 kv cables.
  • Under supervision, perform initial testing and energizing of primary equipment in BUD installations.
  • Under supervision, perform other special tests.
  • Install, remove, change and read single phase or network meters up to a maximum of eight at any single location (other than a water heater or demand meter) in connection with the installation energizing, replacement and removal of an underground service.
  • Perform markouts of conventional and BUD underground facilities.
  • Check general operation of assigned vehicle and associated equipment.
  • Perform other similar or less skilled work of the occupational group.


Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Must meet the Company's "General Requirements" and, in addition:
  • Must have successfully completed the underground portion of the pre-employment test, except that an employee hired prior to May 1, 1980 who has or obtains a high school diploma or its equivalent does not have to complete the pre-employment tests.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and perform routine operations.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude.
  • Must have the ability to learn:
    • The reading of construction prints and the making of simple field sketches.
    • The operation and minor field repair and adjustment of furnaces, blowtorches, and the proper method of heating and melting compounds and metals used in the work of splicing cables.
    • The application of hoists, tackle and equipment ordinarily used in the work.
    • The practices involved in the operation and maintenance of network protectors and associated equipment.
    • The identification and use of all materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in the work.
  • Must have the ability to complete satisfactorily the Company courses in Fundamentals of Electricity - Direct Current and Alternating Current.
  • Must possess a valid New Jersey driver's license and be able to qualify for a commercial driver’s license.
  • Must be familiar with the standard work practices applicable to the work and have the ability to perform the work safely.
  • Must have the ability to diagnose and correct the usual operating difficulties and faults experienced with building apparatus and equipment in the area.


Training and Courses

Fundamentals of Electricity - Direct current/ Alternating current
