Sci II/Sr. Scientist, Discovery Toxicology

Job Description

  • This is a critical position to provide timely and insightful analysis of toxicology information relevant to decisions around target pathway selection, candidate prioritization and Development transitions in support of Biogen’s Discovery and early Development-stage portfolio. This role is part of Discovery teams working on small and large molecules, antisense oligonucleotide and gene therapy programs from early discovery including non-GLP study conduct with potential for overseeing programs into early Development, initial GLP study conduct, report writing and regulatory document preparation.
  • Serve as liaison and advisor to Discovery teams on lead identification and optimization strategy, summarize toxicology profile and provide recommendation of advancement of molecules to enable earliest possible go/no go decision.
  • Collaborate effectively with other scientists, including Medicinal Chemists, Protein Chemists, Pathologists, Study Managers, Pharmacokineticists, Pharmacologists, Formulation Scientists, Manufacturing and other Toxicologists to generate early nonclinical safety plan and design, execute and interpret results from in vitro and in vivo toxicology studies.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, formulations and technical development scientists to assess novel excipients, evaluate impurities and provide risk assessments to guide product quality
  • Deliver impactful oral presentations on strategy, study design, and data analysis to Preclinical Safety, Discovery program teams, and senior management forums.
  • May serve as a subject matter expert (SME) within their field of specialization to provide input on other programs and studies in Discovery and Development.
  • Provide guidance / lead assessment of innovative technologies and databases in the field of toxicology, evaluate new in silico, in vitro and in vivo screening assays, and provide recommendations to advance Biogen’s toxicology screening strategy as appropriate.
  • May represent Biogen on external scientific committees and industry working groups in the area of Discovery Toxicology or areas of specialization.


  • Ph.D. or equivalent in Toxicology, Pharmacology, or closely related field; exceptional non-Ph.D.s considered
  • Toxicology board certification preferred.
  • Working knowledge or experience with gene therapy preferred but not required
  • Prior experience with GLP guidelines and regulatory writing/interactions is preferred but not required
  • Experience/interest in impurity qualification, occupational and manufacturing safety is desired but not required
  • Minimum of 3-6 years toxicology experience in the biopharmaceutical industry. Up to 2 years postdoctoral research experience in a relevant field would be considered contributory to the duration of experience requirement.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise with both in vitro and in vivo toxicology across modalities.
  • Proven organization and time management skills including ability to manage outsourced studies.
  • Must possess good communications and technical writing skills.
