Job Description

Designs, develops, and tests nuclear equipment and systems. Conducts research on new materials of special interest in nuclear reactors. Conducts studies related to the detection and control of radiation and radioactive contaminants. Studies nuclear fuel cycle to define most economical uses of material and safest means of waste products disposal. Other areas of research include radiation transport modeling, statistical analyses and performance metrics. Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.

E86 CVN Nuclear Propulsion - Construction and Process Engineering is in need of a Nuclear Engineer 4 to provide technical oversight of material/component procurement for the Ford Class Propulsion Plant. The Engineer 4 will be the technical lead for the engineering team performing this function within E86. Specific Areas of Responsibility and necessary skills include:

• Provide technical oversight/guidance on significant issues associated with material/component procurement and vendor compliance/issues associated with meeting the purchase order requirements with respect to the manufacturing and delivery of the materials/components used to build the Ford Class Propulsion Plant.
• Serve as the technical lead/SME for the engineering team responsible for procurement engineering within department E86.
• Serve as the SME on structural and mechanical specifications, processes, and controls (such as CVN 78 Class Diagrams, Ship Specs and other CVN 78 Class specific requirement documents) used in the manufacturing of the material/components used to manufacture the CVN 78 Class Propulsion Plant.
• Experience and working knowledge of the NNS Parts Catalog and the Parts Master Office (PMO) processes and procedures.
• Extensive knowledge of and ability to interpret specifications and coded notes associated with CVN78 Class NNPNs specific to nuclear/nonnuclear pipe, pipe fittings, and flanges as well as standard pipe hangers.
• Experience and familiarity with Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence and their application to reviewing NNPNs and Coded Note application to NNPNs.
• Experience developing/working with problem paper (VIRs, eIRs, IRARs, LARs) and an understanding of the entire value stream for each type of problem paper.
• Team player and has the desire and ability to mentor less experienced Engineers and discuss issues with all levels of management.

Basic Qualifications

9 Years with Bachelors in Science; 7 Years with Masters; 4 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

Must work at a high level and possess the ability to understand technical issues, apply technical rigor to arrive at a solution. Ability to lead a team of engineers to arrive at a solution. Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to drive issues to completion to meet schedule needs. Represents the organization as the prime technical contact and spokesperson on material issues. Should have knowledge of CVN 78 propulsion plant system. Must be able to translate issues into presentations for all levels of NNS management and customers (external and internal).
