What You'll Do:

The Principal Data Architect will oversee the data engineering work performed by a global team of software and data engineers and will be located in Conway Park, IL

Responsibilities:
  • Owns the data architecture, and participates in the cross-cutting architecture definition process.
  • Identifies best-in-class components, frameworks and design patterns for integration with Abbott's informatics products.
  • Provides technical project management and detailed functional definition support for data engineering projects, as needed.
  • Executes proof-of-concept projects and technical workshops and supports implementation by a distributed team.
  • Plays a key role in the development of data strategies for various groups (business leaders, data scientists, data analysts, and IT) to help shape the future of what a data-centric organization looks like.
  • Evaluates business requirements and works closely with stakeholders to identify key business needs and translate that into a clear data strategy solution.
  • Defines and implements data lifecycle management processes.
  • Strives to continuously improve the effectiveness of the data management strategy by identifying new opportunities for data and analytics to advance business needs as well as identifying and conveying data quality and gaps.
  • Manages, benchmarks and ensures continuous automated testing, cleansing and refining of data integrity and quality assurance processes to enhance data and improve results.
  • Summarizes and conveys data findings to both a technical and non-technical audience.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations and/or workshops to educate senior organizational leaders and various departments as requested.
  • Remains current with emerging technologies and industry best practices; guides others on major strategies and methodologies.
  • Maintains current job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and/or participating in professional organizations


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in one or more following disciplines: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Decision Sciences, Symbolic Systems, Informatics, Mathematics, Physics or Information Systems; and at least 10 years experience in the software industry.
  • An advanced degree in one of the above disciplines is strongly preferred.
  • The candidate must have experience in developing and launching unique software / informatics products in one of the following industries: healthcare, defense, or telecommunications.
  • Hands-on experience with various data technologies (RDBMS, NoSQL, Hadoop), as well as logical and physical data modeling.
  • The candidate must possess good oral and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years of wide-ranging data experience working with and influencing multiple, cross-functional teams (business analysts, data analysts, data scientist, and IT) to ensure meaningful data collection or connections with responsibility for results, including costs and methods.
  • 6+ years strongly preferredof wide-ranging data experience working with and influencing multiple, cross-functional teams (business analysts, data analysts, data scientist, and IT) to ensure meaningful data collection or connections with responsibility for results, including costs and methods.
  • Skilled data development history working with cloud hosted data infrastructure platform.Certification preferred in one or more of the following cloud platforms: AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google.
  • Strong implementation and support experience of data engineering integration, quality, security, and cataloging applications.
  • Strong technical skills in Postgres or Oracle database management systems.
  • Passionate about technology including data, analytics, machine learning, augmented intelligence, automated decision making
  • Ability to conceive and portray the big data picture and translate data and analysis into actionable insights
  • Ability to work well under pressure and within tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; sound judgment and demonstrated leadership skills
  • Eager to learn and support the business strategy and desire to work on strategic projects
  • Experience in a fast-paced agile development environment and has an ability to execute against timelines
  • Able to provide guidance to subordinates within the latitude of established company policies
