Senior Scientist, Vaccine Process Research & Development

The Vaccine Process Development (VPD) department in West Point, PA is seeking a highly motivated scientist/engineer to join their downstream process development team in support of our Company's expanding vaccine pipeline. The VPD downstream group develops purification processes for the manufacture of vaccine candidates encompassing a diverse range of biomolecules, including viruses, recombinant protein subunits, nucleic acids, and polysaccharide-protein conjugates.

In this role, you will be responsible for applying sound scientific understanding and engineering principles to help develop, optimize, scale-up, and transfer of downstream processes for clinical and commercial manufacture. You will work in an inter-disciplinary environment as an individual scientific contributor under the supervision of a senior scientist. The successful candidate will have a background in biological science or bio/chemical engineering and strong expertise in hands-on, laboratory work. Experience in protein and virus purification using techniques, such as ultrafiltration, chromatography, dead-end filtration and centrifugation, is required. Experience in engineering, characterization, and purification of vaccine/ protein targets, including but not limited to (1) elucidating protein structure, (2) engineering new protein targets, (3) developing biophysical and biochemical assays in solving fundamental protein interaction problems is a plus. To support technology transfers, experience in cGMP practices is also desired. Education Minimum Requirement:

BS in Chemical Engineering or Biological Sciences or related discipline with a minimum of 7 years' experience or

MS in Chemical Engineering or Biological Sciences or related discipline with a minimum of 4 years' experience or

PhD degree in Biological Sciences or Bio/Chemical Engineering with 3+ years of hands-on, laboratory work in the field of bioprocess purification development or 1 year of industrial experience

Required Experience and Skills:
  • Proficiency in downstream purification technologies (e.g. ultrafiltration, chromatography, precipitation, centrifugation)
  • Background in vaccine or biologics process development (downstream)
  • Well-developed organizational, record-keeping, and problem-solving skills, with an attention to detail


Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Strong laboratory skill set designing and executing experiments independently in a manner that meets quality and timeline expectations.
  • Hands-on work with protein and polysaccharide, nucleic acid, or viral purification, bioconjugation, and HPLC methods.
  • Understanding of cGMP principles and experience in cGMP manufacturing
  • Experience in engineering, characterization, and purification of vaccine/ protein targets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required to interact with key stakeholders, customers, and external vendors
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a team environment and is results oriented
  • Experience with Biosafety Level 2 operations and technology transfer.
