The Biologics Process Research & Development organization within our company's Research Laboratories is responsible for developing the drug substance manufacturing processes for our company's biologics pipeline, including cell line, upstream and downstream process development. We work closely with colleagues in Discovery, Pre-clinical and Early Development to rapidly develop manufacturing processes for diverse biotherapeutics, and efficiently manufacture material to supply clinical trials. We are also responsible for late stage/commercial process development and development of new manufacturing technologies. We work with our partners in our company's Manufacturing Division to commercialize and launch new products

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to join the Biologics Upstream Pilot Plant Technologies Group within Biologics PR&D, as part of the team charged with supporting the operations of the mammalian and microbial bench top bioreactors and introducing innovative technologies. Candidate is expected to work in a team atmosphere in close collaboration with BioProcess development scientists, facility engineering, lab automation and safety groups.

Responsibilities:
  • Introduction and evaluation of novel technologies and process analytical tools
  • Champion the set up and operations of microbial fermenters
  • Lead the expansion and troubleshooting of mammalian perfusions
  • Work closely with the lab automation team for process automation and control to streamline benchtop bioreactor operations
  • Support pipeline programs for first-in-human and commercial processes, efficiently developing high yield, robust, and scalable cell culture processes.
  • Scale-up and technology transfer of bioprocesses to manufacturing facilities
  • Data analysis, data interpretation, manuscript preparation, publication and presentations
  • Contribute to a safe and compliant laboratory work environment


Education:
  • BS in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering or related discipline with 7 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree with 4 years of relevant experience; or Ph.D. with relevant academic or industrial experience.


Required Experience and Skills:
  • Microbial fermentation lab or pilot scale experience
  • Solid scientific understanding and hands-on experience in cell culture and bench scale bioreactor operations
  • Demonstrated ability for independent execution of experiments
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work in a matrixed team environment and collaborate with both internal and external partners including vendors


Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Basic understanding of statistical methods and computer programming/analysis packages like SIMCA, JMP
  • Understanding of bioreactor control systems and automation; PAT tools like Raman and biocapacitance
  • Basic understanding of high throughput systems like ambr15, ambr250 bioreactors
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically with excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills
