Job Description

This position is for a senior level project lead and subject matter expert to serve in the Nuclear Propulsion Divisions, Reactor Servicing Program (Department E82). This position will support the group's design activities associated with Nimitz and Ford Class Carriers, Virginia Class Submarines, Land-based Prototypes, as well as work associated with fueling, refueling, defueling nuclear reactors. The successful applicant should have extensive experience with all aspects of reactor plant design, technical research, project management, work planning and status, team leadership, and possess excellent problem solving skills related to designing, building and maintaining naval nuclear propulsion plants. An extensive knowledge of 3D Parametric Modeling in multiple design software platforms, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and Immersive Visualization is desired. The applicant should also have a proven history of resolving complex problems with limited supervision while successfully communicating with all levels of management and both internal and external customers. A demonstrated ability to train and mentor others is also required. This position will involve taking a leadership role in all aspects of Department E82's design responsibilities while also serving as a subject matter expert in one or more of the following areas: mechanical design, tooling design, 3D model development, lifting and handling, immersive technologies, and complex spatial analysis studies. As a subject matter expert, the candidate will be expected to develop departmental and division wide processes to standardize and quantify design practices, lead implementation of new design tools, develop in-house training, support special projects, and supporting emergent high priority issues. This position will also involve assisting Reactor Servicing teams in pursuit of future state visions and developing long range plans (i.e. software integration, digital disclosures, visual work instructions, AR/VR). She/he will also exercise technical authority by developing and improving standardized design practices (procedures), and training of Reactor Services personnel. Applicants must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently and in groups with only minimal oversight from management. Applicant will be expected to serve in a make-up supervisory role for periods of time should the need arise due to personnel absence, departure, or temporary assignment outside of the group.

Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost. Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development. Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures. Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.

Basic Qualifications

5 Years of Designer experience with Bachelor of Science degree in related field; 3 years of relevant professional or Designer experience with a Master's Degree; 0 years with a PhD.

This position requires a bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience; 4 years of related experience can be substituted for bachelor's degree; 8 years of non-related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree; 12 years of non-exempt, Manufacturing, Military, Shipbuilding or Trades experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree.

Preferred Qualifications

BS in Engineering Design Technology preferred.15+ Years working in AutoCAD, Inventor, CREO, and Teamcenter/NX.10+ Years of training experience.Technical lead for Design implementation of new tools/technologies (immersive visualization).Technical SME for GD&T and the requirements of ASME Y14.5.
