The Sub Fleet Support Acoustics (SONAR) Lead is a demanding position requiring in-depth technical knowledge, and a solid grasp of the requirements of submarine SONAR electronics. The Lead must be able to effectively communicate with internal and external customers including Shop and Shipboard Trade Management, Project, Engineering, SUPSHIP,NAVSEA, and coordinate with many different organizations to safely and successfully accomplish testing on 688 Class submarines. The SONAR Lead is responsible to lead a team in testing, maintenance and operation of the Core SONAR Systems (AN/BQQ-5/10 and AN/BSY-1), arrays, hydrophone and transducer sensors to include WLR-9, WQC-2, Sound Velocity, Noise Monitoring, Hull Array, Top and Bottom Sounders, Distress Pinger, and Spherical Arrays. The SONAR system gathers sensor data and displays contact information critical to ship operations. The SONAR Lead grooms, troubleshoots and tests proper operation of the interfacing systems (i.e. Combat Control, TSMS, etc) and ensures that all systems function properly as designed and in accordance with the required test procedures, generates Inspection Reports when discrepancies are found in equipment operation/functions of the SONAR system and assists in the problem resolution phases. The SONAR Lead will provide a single, consolidated, cost effective and non-redundant approach to the testing and evaluation of SONAR.
The Lead will performs a variety of duties in the electronic, mechanical, electromechanical, or optical areas. Constructs, troubleshoots, calibrates, adjusts, tests, and maintains equipment, components, devices, or systems. The Lead works from engineering drawings and written or verbal instructions. Operates related equipment; conducts tests and reports data in prescribed format. Performs calibration and alignment checks; makes adjustments, modifications, and replacements as directed; prepares prescribed compounds and solutions. Excludes technicians working in Production or Quality Assurance.

Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

Basic Qualifications

Associate's Degree and 6 years of experience. 2 years of related experience can be substituted for Associate's degree. 4 years of non-related experience can be substituted for Associate's degree. An Apprentice Certificate or graduation from Navy Nuclear Power School can be substituted for Associate's degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Must be able to go onboard the submarine and ride sea trials.
