Senior Scientist, in vivo Pharmacology

4.4 million people have sickle cell disease (SCD), which resulted in about 114,800 deaths across the globe in 2015. A number of health problems may develop, such as attacks of pain, anemia, swelling in the hands and feet, bacterial infections and stroke in SCD patients.

The Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

The Exploratory Disease Area (DAx) department at NIBR is looking for a highly motivated scientist to join the project teams to develop ground-breaking therapies for SCD and other monogenic diseases. The successful candidate will play an important role in leading pharmacology studies of LMW compounds or biologics in rodent models to support the preclinical development of innovative therapies.

Your Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Working collaboratively with team members to design and execute in vivo studies to evaluate the pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and efficacy features of selected candidates

* Developing disease-relevant mouse models and humanized mouse models for preclinical studies together with team members

* Performing molecular assays to investigate the effects of LMW cpds or biologics in different tissues/cell types

* Preparing study reports and presenting the results at internal meetings

Minimum requirements

What You'll Bring to the Role:

* Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in biology or related subject area with extensive experience in pharmacology studies in rodent models, and a strong background in pharmacology and mouse physiology

* Proficient with skills routinely used in pharmacology studies with LMW cpd's or biologics: dosing/injections via multiple routes; different blood collection methods; necropsies for tissue collection; anesthesia and euthanasia

* Experienced with general molecular techniques such as Western blotting, ELISAs, and q-PCR, etc.

* Be familiar with computer programs including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and GraphPad Prism

* Candidate is a demonstrated team player, has strong analytical and communication skills, and has the enthusiasm and drive to learn new skills. She/he will also be required to maintain a well-organized notebook.

Desirable Requirements:

* Hands-on experience in humanized mouse models, AAV vectors and transduction, cell culture, transfection and flow cytometry is preferred
