Position Specific Description

Florida Power & Light seeks a talented environmental management professional that is motivated, self-directed, and results-driven. The position is within Corporate Environmental Services and leads a team of environmental professionals that provide waste management expertise and services to business units across the organization.

The team employs its subject matter and technical expertise to provide waste management guidance, regulatory reviews, emerging issues management, due diligence services, and other technical services (e.g., Phase 1 & 2 Environmental Site Assessments, remediation and site closures, and hazardous substances and waste management). The selected candidate must have at least 10 years of relevant subject matter experience and proven management and leadership skills.

The selected candidate needs excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem solving, technical, analytical, and communication skills. This position leads analysis of existing and emerging waste management regulations or legislation and develops appropriate internal and external communications to provide company response. This position also routinely communicates complex technical and regulatory matters to internal and external parties.

Responsibilities and Duties include:
  • Manage team of professionals.
  • Prepare reports and other documents that demonstrate sound technical writing, critical thinking, and application of principles
  • Collaborate with other members of the team and organization
  • Track emerging issues and regulations to identify risk, evaluate impacts, articulate and negotiate company positions, and translate final regulations into compliance actions
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with industry peers, internal clients, and vendors that promote a high degree of mutual respect and recognized integrity
  • Manage environmental review of potential acquisitions
  • Review site assessment reports and provide comments with recommendations as due diligence relative to real estate transactions and energy project development
  • Function as a subject matter expert for the waste and hazardous substances area including CERCLA, RCRA, TSCA, DOT HAZMAT and related state rules


Core Competencies:
  • Advanced knowledge of environmental regulations
  • Advanced analysis, problem solving, and professional skills
  • Experience managing typical utility waste (eg. CCR, PCB, Asbestos, etc.)
  • Experience managing hazardous, toxic, and solid waste
  • Proficiency with MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to travel, work in the field, and work outdoors


Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's degree
  • Bachelor's degree (Chemistry, Environmental Science or similar degree preferred)
  • OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER with current 8-hour refresher certification
  • Certified Hazardous Material Manager or equivalent certification
  • Experience with legislative and regulatory development, review, comment, and interpretation


Job Overview

This job is responsible for managing multiple multifaceted environmental issues, licensing and permitting processes, legislative development, staff resources and related activities to provide management support to NextEra Energy, Inc. departments.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Obtains all required federal, state and local environmental licenses, permits and approvals for development projects
• Supports multiple projects with multifaceted environmental and regulatory issues and assists in comprehensive environmental due diligence reviews for potential acquisitions
• Maintains current knowledge of pertinent national and state level environmental policies and regulations
• Interfaces with internal and external customers, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders, and be able to assist in resolving complex environmental matters
• Helps ensure compliance with federal, state and local environmental regulations, as well as company policies
• Translates regulations and permit into actionable construction compliance tasks
• Provides specialized environmental expertise and environmental technical support
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned
