Applied Research Manager (Surreal LiveMaps Incubation)

Summary

Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL-R) brings together a world-class R&D team of researchers, developers, and engineers to build the future of connection within virtual and augmented reality. We're developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses.
The technology that is being developed within the Surreal team at FRL-R is a new generation of end-to-end real-time 3D scene understanding systems working across novel mobile sensor design, sensor fusion, state estimation, computer vision, large-scale reconstruction and localization, as well as large-scale machine learning, online inference and optimization.
The Surreal team is seeking an experienced Applied Research Manager to lead and support a group of world-class researchers in order to work on a new research initiative as part of the LiveMaps project.

Required Skills

  • Lead and support a team of applied research scientists to conduct cutting edge research in computer vision and machine learning.
  • Developing deep neural network models for real-time scene understanding and object tracking.
  • Partner with Research Program Management in developing a research/incubation/productization roadmap and strategy.
  • Be both a technical leader and people manager.
  • Communicate cross-functionally and drive research efforts.
  • Partner closely with many Facebook internal partner teams to create shared roadmaps and deliver on the product vision.
  • Communicate with the leadership.


Minimum Qualification

  • 5+ years of people management experience in multi-disciplinary global teams at the intersection of tech and product, including building performing teams and organization.
  • 10+ years of R&D work experience, including 5+ years experience of hands-on technical leadership.
  • PhD degree in computer vision, machine learning, robotics or related field.
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning and deep learning tools (e.g. PyTorch, NumPy).
  • Experience in 3D scene understanding, 3D object reconstruction and tracking.
  • Demonstrated experience in recruiting and managing technical teams, including performance management.
  • Leadership and interpersonal communication experience in working across many disciplines, driving best practices, and mentor team members.


Preferred Qualification

  • Experience leading a team to ship advanced machine learning/computer vision features into consumer electronic products.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, or fellowships, as well as first-authored publications in top conferences at leading conferences (e.g., NIPS, ICLR, ICML, SIGGRAPH, CVPR, ECCV and ICCV) or journals (e.g., PAMI, IJCV, JMLR, ToG).
  • Experience managing joint hardware-software development and associated rapid prototyping projects.
