  • This position combines the principles and practices of organizational change management with process improvement skills (e.g. Lean/6-Sigma) to U.S. Navy ship maintenance, repair, modernization, alteration, overhaul and conversion operations.
    The shipyard environment is a dynamic, 24/7 industrial operation that includes large facilities (piers, drydocks, cranes, manufacturing shops, power/energy/ waste-water plants, rolling stock, etc.), employment of organic labor, subcontractors, Department of Navy active duty & civilian personnel, and third-party government contractors. The BAE NSR Hourly Production Workforce is represented by Local 684 of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers (et al).
    The position will be responsible to the Vice President & General Manager, BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair (BAE NSR) for leading Operational Excellence actions that establish an organization-wide culture of competitiveness . The position will also work closely with BAE NSR Directors to design and implement process improvement initiatives leading to tangible business efficiencies.

    This position requires:
    • Experience in leading organizational transformation, with a strong foundation for cultural & behavioral aspects of organization change
    • Skills and experience as Process Improvement Leader & Facilitator to establish goals and maintain focus on achieving the goals
    • Ability to create an organization-wide mindset for process improvement, rework elimination/Cost of Poor Quality measurement, innovation, and technology insertion
    • Strong relational and communication skills to constructively engage from the executive level to the shop floor level, and across affiliated shipyards
    • Interpersonal and diplomatic skills to navigate between functions that struggle with operational integration, and be seen as a trusted advisor to each member of the leadership team
    • A strong, business-oriented perspective, with an understanding of the connection between operations and financial results
    • Lean/6-Sigma background to enable leading process improvement events (Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping, A-3 technique, etc.), and assist line leaders with implementation of changes
    • A level-headed, steady-hand temperament to insulate the organization from crisis management behavior
    • A flexible and innovative mindset to help facilitate problem solving
    • Capability to conduct independent research, study, investigation, data collection, performance analysis, and report/briefing generation

    Required Education, Experience, & Skills
    • 10years Relevant Industrial of Manufacturing experience
    • Minimum of 5 years directly involved in the practice of organizational change and process improvement in large industrial and manufacturing operations.
    • Accredited Bachelor's degree in Organizational Management, Operations Management, Resources Management, Financial Management, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, Production Engineering, Systems Engineering
    • Educational requirements can be offset by a minimum of 15 years of direct & specific working experience in organizational change management and industrial operations process improvement.
    • Additional desirable qualifications for this position include some or all of the following:
    • Working understanding of how shipyards operate - not an expert, but a basic understanding of shipyard dynamics and processes
    • Lean/6-Sigma Black-belt certification
    • Advanced graduate study in organizational management, operations management, business management, systems management, industrial, production or systems engineering, dynamic modeling/simulation, applied mathematics or statistics


    Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

    • Working understanding of how shipyards operate - not an expert, but a basic understanding of shipyard dynamics and processes
    • Lean/6-Sigma Black-belt certification
