Job Description

One purpose – to reimagine medicine! The Novartis Oncology Disease Area is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and collaborative scientist to join the Biological Chemistry (BC) group in a hands-on role to discover the next generation of innovative cancer treatments. We are an early stage drug discovery team focused on understanding and exploiting the molecular mechanisms of novel cancer targets for the discovery, characterization and optimization of small molecule therapeutics.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a breadth of experience in developing biochemical and biophysical assays, profiling small molecules against protein targets, and collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams. This position will require excellent technical ability at the bench, an eagerness to learn new things, and the willingness to tackle challenging scientific questions.
Your key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Function as a protein biochemistry/biophysics expert within an interdisciplinary team contributing to the execution of experiments in support of the research activities and project goals. The role will quickly evolve as the primary line function representative within a project team.
- Design, develop, and troubleshoot biochemical/biophysical assays using various detection technologies to identify and characterize the mode of binding of small molecule modulators to cancer targets.
- Assess and implement emerging cutting edge technologies and novel assay approaches to advance drug discovery programs

Minimum requirements

What you will bring to the role:

Desirable Requirements:
- MS degree or a PhD in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Enzymology or related field with 7+ years (MS) or with 0-3 years (PhD) of relevant small molecule drug discovery experience
- Solid understanding of protein function and enzyme mechanism; experience with biochemical and/or biophysical assay development for protein targets and small molecule inhibitor characterizations as well as protein-ligand binding interactions
- Experience with mass spectrometry-based activity/binding assays is highly desired, in addition to experience with fluorescence-based assay techniques (e.g. HTRF, FP, or quench assays) and label-free technologies (e.g. SPR, ITC, MST, DSF)
- Hands-on experience with automation to enable medium to high throughput assays is a plus
- Proven ability to analyze, interpret and present large datasets in a clear and concise manner
- Excellent team-player, with strong communication and inter-personal skills
- Structural Biology experience a plus.
