In 2019 Optum announced a broad, first-of-its-kind partnership with John Muir Health that will leverage data analytics tools to deliver quality, affordable care to patients in the Bay Area: As Optum supports John Muir Health in this strategic transformation it will be critical that the Analytics team provides high quality deliverables that support operations and decision-making, while also creating leading capabilities in predictive analytics and use of novel data sources.

The Analytics Principal will act as an advisor and interface between the analytics organization and key client business stakeholders to support the operational and strategic initiatives for a strategic client partner. This role is critical to fostering relationships, driving overall performance, and instilling rigor in the approach taken to produce analytic deliverables. Working closely with client business and clinical leaders as well as internal Optum business partners, this individual will support and drive the client's analytic agenda by proactively surfacing potential analytic solutions, scoping solutions in response to client business needs and working with the analytics organization to deliver on analytic solutions according to the client's strategic priorities. This role is critical to support execution of the client's strategic initiatives and operational delivery system performance.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Partner with key stakeholders to develop and execute operational and strategic client plans that addresses the client's business needs
  • Understand and translate key client business challenges tied to value based care and/or acute care delivery into potential analytic solutions to support those business challenges
  • Lead and conduct analysis designed to identify root causes and produce cogent recommendations for business stakeholder actions
  • Support service deployment and closely monitors performance, working with analytics leadership, finance and operations to ensure financial viability and operational excellence
  • Act as a subject matter expert to help cultivate growth and work at the "top of license" in other analytics team members
  • Collaborate with leaders of strategic initiatives to drive analytic information into business actions and with clinical leaders and clinical informatics team to drive findings into clinical workflow

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 7 years demonstrated success in healthcare analytics and/or consulting
  • 5+ years of experience interacting with healthcare leaders including "C" level executives and medical directors
  • 5+ years of experience leading large complex programs and/or initiatives where data is a key asset
  • 3+ years of strategic and operational working knowledge of healthcare delivery system in value-based care and fee for service environments
  • 3+ years of experience in analyzing hospital operation, clinical variation in the hospital environment and/or experience in providing analytical support in value-based contract negotiations with payors and providers
  • Basic SQL skills (Advanced preferred)
  • Local or willing to relocate to the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area

  • Demonstrated success leading large complex programs and/or initiatives where data is a key asset
  • Experience working in a matrix environment
  • Exceptional writing and presentation skills
  • Able to translate complex data analytic information into simple business terms
  • Able lead diagnostic exercise with client and propose effective analytic solutions to meet business needs
