I. Job Summary

This corporate position helps create and execute Waste Management's external communications plans and strategy. A primary focus of the role will be to elevate the Company's sustainability and ESG narrative by developing impactful communications campaigns that draw upon a range of tactics, including media outreach and social media engagement.

Part of a team that is responsible for translating the company's strategy into clear, compelling communications. Together with the Director of Communications, is accountable for the company's relationships with the media, creation of messaging and maintaining brand reputation.

Responsible for the creation and execution of storytelling that translates the company's sustainability, business, people and technology objectives. This communications leader will ensure stakeholder alignment to connect audiences with targeted messages to elevate our brand purpose. The senior manager, corporate communications and media relations will also support a team of Area communicators across the U.S., Canada and India to support their communications needs while driving strategic business growth.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
  • Responsible for developing comprehensive, multi-channel communications strategies and campaigns to raise WM's profile as a sustainability leader with external audiences, including employees, media, customers, communities and shareholders.
  • Manage development of sustainability messaging and narrative for use across internal and external communications channels, in alignment with other relevant functions and key stakeholders.
  • Provide communications support for sustainability content and deliverables including key corporate reports, media strategies, social media materials, video scripts and messaging/talking points.
  • Maintain an ongoing, in-depth understanding of communications best practices, media interest and opportunities to promote sustainability thought leadership through outreach.
  • Exceptional writer and copy editor.
  • Execute regular reporting on quality and quantity of media coverage and use data to inform future strategies and tactics.
  • Craft compelling email pitches and outreach campaigns. Comfortable with proactive media relations outreach.
  • Protect WM's reputation through creative storytelling, strategic media relations and external communications planning.
  • Develop strategic responses to effectively manage media inquiries, including in a crisis or with issues management.
  • Translate business strategies and initiatives into messaging and content. Prioritize communications and messages to maximize impact on target external client audiences, including the public, customers, communities and the media.
  • Help develop strategic external communication plans and message development.
  • Manage external vendor and agency relationships.
  • Develop external company message positioning and determine delivery and timing of company messages to target audiences.
  • Able to serve as a corporate media contact for news releases and incoming inquiries.
  • Networks and communicates directly with Area communicators to ensure consistent strategy implementation, delivery of tools and messaging.
III. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

Education: Bachelor's Degree (accredited), or equivalent experience in Communication, Journalism or Public Relations and seven to 10 years previous experience in a communications department or agency.

  • Seven years previous experience in a communications department or agency (in addition to education requirement).
  • Experience forging media relationships, vetting media inquiries and proactively seeking media placements (7 years).

B. Other Knowledge Skills or Abilities
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, but also be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize requests and leverage communications resources in a matrixed environment for business requests.
  • Ability to craft impactful storytelling messages.
  • Experience securing local and national press.
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize under pressure.

D. Travel Requirements

Position could require up to 10% travel.
