Postdoctoral Fellow - Military HIV Research Program

HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) located in Silver Spring MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP.

Learns and conducts basic research on the development of an HIV-1 vaccine. Utilizes molecular biological approaches and protein purification to create nanoparticle HIV-1 candidate vaccines derived from envelope sequences. Nanoparticle antigens are formulated with the Army Liposome Formulations as adjuvants. Learns and conducts immunological studies for antibody and cellular immune responses in animals. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential publications inventions, products, and problems.

Responsibilities:
  1. Conducts independent laboratory research and learns techniques required to conduct the research projects. Maintains prokaryotic and mammalian cell cultures used for protein expression. Performs protein purification and refolding to produce nanoparticles. Characterizes nanoparticles and conducts immunological studies in animals. (35%)
  2. Learns and implements the principles of adjuvant and liposome-based adjuvant preparation, characterization, and use. (25%)
  3. Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. (10%)
  4. Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols. (10%)
  5. Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals. Presents at scientific conferences. (10%)
  6. Collaborates with other members of MHRP and WRAIR to enhance the research and mission. Follows all safety procedures. (10%)
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role. Follows all safety procedures.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data.

Minimum Education: Doctoral Degree is required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum 0-5 years of relevant work experience is required.

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
