Head of Clinical Imaging, Late Development Oncology

Do you have expertise in, and passion for, clinical imaging? Would you like to apply your expertise to impact our delivery, science and innovation in a company that follows the science and turns ideas into life changing medicines? Then AstraZeneca might be the one for you!

ABOUT ASTRAZENECA

AstraZeneca is a global, science-led, patient-focused biopharmaceutical company that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialisation of prescription medicines for some of the world's most serious diseases. But we're more than one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies.

BUSINESS AREA

Our Oncology R&D group has achieved a lot in a short space of time by focusing on our pipeline and evaluating novelty and clinical development movement. But the next chapter of our pipeline is more exciting than ever... We have an ambitious goal to deliver 6 new molecular entities by 2025. It is up to each of us to keep pushing forward and pioneer new approaches. From bold innovations and integrated healthcare systems to harnessing data and technology.

Within Late Development Oncology, our Imaging group is focused on strengthening our delivery, science and innovation and reshaping the future for clinical development trials.

What you'll do

The position of Head of Clinical Imaging presents a unique opportunity to lead a cohesive, high-performing, multi-disciplinary team of imaging experts, who provide strategic and technical expertise on the implementation of a wide range imaging endpoints.

The intent of this role is to set a clear strategic direction for clinical imaging across the pipeline with a focus on late-phase studies with registrational intent. You will evaluate how imaging can be optimised to further enhance the development and approval of AZ assets, and clearly communicate this through a network of key stakeholders across the organisation.

In this role, you will ensure quality delivery of both our investigator review and blinded independent central review (BICR), help increase the scientific contribution to Late Development Oncology projects and drive innovation. Partnering closely with our Global Clinical Programme Leads as well as Data Science and AI initiatives, this role will help shape the future of imaging. You will establish an imaging data strategy in close collaboration with internal partners to enable the value of imaging data including re-use of imaging datasets to be maximised (e.g. imaging for phenotyping), and will be a bridge with the other imaging specialists outside of oncology. You will serve as a member of the Global Project Team (GPT), when required.

The imaging group provides broad expertise from well-established methods such as RECIST 1.1 through to state-of-the-art innovative methods to measure tumor burden and treatment effects. As an influential leader, you understand AZ's priorities and can steer an agile team to deliver imaging solutions that support our success in getting medicines to patients in need.

In this role you will ensure coordination of all aspects of imaging delivery in synchronization with the R&D processes, informed by deep understanding of clinical development in Oncology and state-of-the-art imaging including use as a biomarker strategy.

You will develop and maintain partnerships with imaging CROs, ranging from small start-ups to multicentre imaging support, and build strong matrix connections to key technology groups.

You can inspire the imaging team with an exciting vision, but also identify and develop key talent.

Essential for the role
  • In this position you will have PhD and/or MD with a solid background in imaging applied to drug development or a postgraduate degree with relevant experience, e.g. Imaging related degree and/or professional experience related to oncology imaging, either radiographic, medical or physical science base. Experience of supporting clinical trials for the delivery of imaging components (e.g. RECIST 1.1) will be considered as an alternative to a PhD qualification in this field.
  • Experience in supporting key drug projects across a portfolio of small molecule oncology drug studies, immuno-oncology and haematology compounds, combinations with chemo- and radiotherapy, and antibody-drug conjugates
  • Thorough understanding of imaging and clinical development in oncology, including experience with regulatory framework for biomarkers, and use of imaging for registration of Oncology products; Experience interacting with imaging CROs;
  • Strategic influencing skills with experience in stakeholder management at leadership team level
  • A strong record in leading specialised and multiskilled imaging scientists in a matrix environment
  • translation of the scientific and operational viability of imaging to the application in clinical trials
  • Outstanding scientific reputation as evidenced by multiple publications in peer reviewed journals and as speaker of conferences

Desirable for the role
  • Interaction with internal and external key opinion leaders
  • Help raise the level of understanding of imaging within clinical development - this may include imaging training & education as required
  • Strong network in the academic and clinical community of imaging specialties (mandatory) and of Oncology.
  • Confident team player and assertive but willing to listen and to seek and learn from the views of others
