High Level Disinfection (HLD) & Sterilization Educator

The Educator, High Level Disinfection and Sterilization is a position within a section of the Department of Infectious Disease that provides support to the entire institution and has oversight for quality and education related to High Level Disinfectant and Sterile Processing throughout the institution. The role includes assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating education and training of the staff performing High Level Disinfectant and/or Sterile Processing. Ensuring professional development, maintaining competencies, as well as coordinating the research and evaluation on new products, equipment and standards.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree and five years of hospital based sterile processing experience to include 2 years of quality and education training experience. Travel to Houston Area Locations (HALS) required.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Education Resource
Responsible for implementation of new employee departmental orientation; responsible for ongoing staff competencies validations; schedules staff educational in-services; develop and maintain departmental procedures and guidelines; maintains departmental education records in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
Quality
Provides quality assurance monitoring program; performs audits of processes and maintains records. Stays abreast of regulations, standards, and guidelines consistent with AORN, AAMI, The Joint Commission, CMS, CDC, OSHA, and FDA requirements as well as the hospital's policies and procedures. Represents Sterile Processing through consultation on interdepartmental and interdisciplinary committees and task forces.

Other
Acts or performs functions of Sterile Processing as needed, independently, work proficiently without supervision in all aspects of sterile processing to include the decontamination, preparation packaging sterilization sterile storage, and high-level disinfection while adhering to policies and procedures. Operates and troubleshoots the equipment specific to Sterile Processing but not limited to steam, eto, low temperature, automatic endoscope reprocessor, cart washer, washer/disinfector, ultrasonic cleaner, heat sealers, storage carousel as well as a variety of testing devices.

Participates in staff and self-development meetings/in-services training.
Proficiency in utilization of instrumentation tracking system.
Must be customer service oriented and demonstrate customer service.
Participates in at least one process performance initiative.
Participates in at least two approved educational classes/seminars.
Maintains professional competencies and certifications

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree.

Experience

Required: Five years hospital-based sterile processing experience. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.

Preferred: Five years hospital-based sterile processing experience to include 2 years quality and education training experience

Certification/Licensure

One of the following: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM). Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM). Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) by the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD). Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM). Certified Healthcare Leadership (CHL) by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM). Certified Sterile Processing Distribution Technician (CSPDT) by the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD). Certified Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) by the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD). Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS) by the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD). Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
