The Health System Performance Improvement (HSPI) practice exists to support health care provider organizations in their quest to achieve top performance clinically, operationally, and financially. Provider organizations face the challenges of addressing the complex medical and societal needs of patients, integrating care delivery across multiple settings, transitioning from fee-for-service to value based reimbursement, and maintaining sustainable financial margins. HSPI is uniquely positioned to support health care providers by evaluating existing strengths and challenges, designing solutions to advance performance, building these solutions in alignment within their operating environment, and managing the solutions alongside our clients to ensure results are achieved.

The Vice President, Health System Performance Improvement (HSPI) will play a lead role in the growth of the medical group optimization business line. The Vice President is responsible for defining the portfolio of solutions needed to support health systems in optimizing the performance of their employed medical group enterprise. This person will lead in developing partnerships with health systems, overseeing the performance of these partnerships, and continuously advancing Optum's portfolio of services to enable sustainable results for our clients. The Vice President will work alongside other business lines in HSPI and across Optum, aligning our medical group solutions with the broader programs and services within Optum that come together to support the full continuum of care performance our health system clients need.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Direct a team of medical group performance improvement experts, including consulting, operations, strategy, analytics, and project management
  • Build the medical group optimization client base, including activities to guide sales, marketing and development.
  • Define the strategic priorities of the medical group optimization business line
  • Align the medical group optimization business line with other Optum programs and services to provide more comprehensive client solutions
  • Ensure that client expectations and contract deliverables are met, and serves as a principal point of relationship and escalation for client executives
  • Accountable for overall engagement execution including quality of output, client satisfaction (Net Promoter Score), and profitability
  • Serve as a member of the HSPI leadership team, supporting the advancement of the overall practice, including growth, talent development, and integration

Required Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree required
  • 10+ years of medical group operations responsibility and/or consulting experience.
  • 5+ years of management experience
  • Proven track record of achieving industry leading performance results
  • Ability to design, build and implement programs that improve medical group performance
  • Strong leadership skills as evidenced by increasing responsibilities as career has progressed
  • Demonstrates strong relationship management skills including physicians, executives, colleagues, and peers
  • Up to 60% travel when safe
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. When in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are required to wear a mask in common areas. In addition, employees must comply with any state and local masking orders


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Hospital Operations or Health Administration
  • Understands the shift to value-based care and the implications on health systems and their medical staff
  • 5+ years in business development and proven experience driving client sales and growth across a strong and active network of contacts
  • Experience in both medical group operations and consulting role preferred
  • Senior leadership experience working in systems with multi-state ambulatory sites (operations or consulting)
  • P&L responsibility with track record of growth and profitability

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $169,500 to $322,500.
