Site Name: USA - Pennsylvania - Upper Providence Posted Date: Jul 13 2021 The R&D Operations purpose is to do what it takes to mobilize R&D's people, time and resources for maximum patient impact. ‘Doing what it takes' means resourcing operational needs with agility and flexibility. To address this business need, the Operational Performance Manager (OPM) will be deployed to undertake a core set of operational responsibilities for a defined portion of their time such as operational governance support, LT facilitation, external conference preparation etc.. and will also be assigned to complete discrete pieces of work within R&D for relatively short-term periods. This is an independent contributor role - the incumbent must be a self-starter who thrives on a work cycle that requires the ability to provide consistent support to operations in the functional lines where needed and to manage multiple assignments in parallel. Moving nimbly across the organization is an essential component of the role. Broad knowledge of drug discovery and development, the ability to drive focus, improve efficiency and thrive in a highly flexible and agile environment are critical elements of this position. Reporting to the Lead, Operational Performance Centre, the OPM provides expertise in operational excellence on a pull basis, as required by the functional Operations lines and by the wider R&D organization. Strength in relationship building will be key to success alongside the ability to thought partner with business leaders and communicate clearly. These responsibilities include some of the following: On a deployed basis, partner with specific R&D Leaders and teams to provide hands on expertise in operational excellence in support of overall enterprise objectives. Accountable for ensuring seamless business operations support from R&D Operations and for resolving issues. Enable R&D Leaders' understanding of the measures and key drivers of business effectiveness in the scope of the deployment (and the trade-offs between quality, time and cost). Due to the nature of some assignments tending toward the shorter term, the ability to bring relevance to these value drivers by emphasizing urgency and a sprint mindset will be key. Accountable for ensuring performance metrics are in place to gauge the impact to R&D of work undertaken. Drive the development, interpretation and provision of key performance indicators and analyses for each deployment. Ensure stakeholder engagement strategy is in place to influence decision making and behavior change to improve productivity (proportionately to the work undertaken). Influence deployed leader with explicit reference to trends in the internal and external environment, as appropriate. Perform ad-hoc analysis, develop strategic options, and provide recommendations to enable informed decision making specifically in the areas of major investments, organizational setup, and productivity improvement (business case development, cost / benefit analysis, pro/cons, etc). Lead or support specific business projects and create deliverables (business plans, business cases and KPI's) as required. Understand and be able to influence the environment outside of the deployed team to support achievement of its objectives (e.g. other R&D lines, PSC or other Global Support Functions). Manage stakeholders and interdependencies as necessary to complete projects successfully. Why you? Basic Qualifications: We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals: Bachelor's Degree 5+ years in pharma, biotech or associated role Experience with key drug discovery and development processes plus broad appreciation of various R&D business unit capabilities and strategies in order to quickly transition into assignments. Direct experience regarding the application of these processes to increase value to the customer and operations line. Firsthand experience with Clinical, R&D or Operations experience is necessary for enabling the OPM to contextualize strategy, to determine the most effective implementation methodology and provide an engagement platform which motivates staff to deliver the operational plan. Experience within corporate businesses in a consultative or central function, which interfaces with the customer line, can provide insight and produce efficiency. Preferred Qualifications: If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus: Certification or license in ADP, PMP, Lean6Sigma, Change Management Specific core capabilities to accomplish this remit include project management, change management, resource management and proficiency in fundamental business planning skills. Must thrive on solving problems and not shy away from confronting issues requiring resolution. Requires ability to assess size of problem in terms of business risk and mitigate proportionately. Must have an entrepreneurial track record of taking intelligent risks, of courage in personal decision-making and willingness to be held accountable. Ability to understand organizational and business issues which inhibit effective delivery, positioning these issues in a problem statement which can be distilled to root causes. From the root causes, able to categorize source issues under the premises of process, systems or people and communicate the outcomes to leadership with the goal of establishing solutions. This approach allows the OPM to identify blockers of decision making and provides a consistent methodology to issue resolution. Why GSK?
