Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a staff writer to support its growing and expanding games subscription business. You will report to the Editorial Director, and in this role will identify and report engaging stories about language and culture, the puzzle community and our games, including the legendary New York Times Crossword, the Spelling Bee, and other games. This role is based in New York City.

Responsibilities :
  • Write at least one story a week for Wordplay
  • Program Wordplay section front with most recent/relevant stories
  • Help identify and write stories for potential and existing audiences for our coverage
  • Write engaging display and social copy for stories, and work with community engagement manager to create social media opportunities for Games
  • React to trends and news with appropriate stories
  • Promote discussion and debate in the puzzles/games community with interesting topics
  • Regularly pitch and complete enterprise pieces, including collaborations with other desks and multimedia teams

  • 5+ years reporting or communications in a consumer-facing field such as entertainment, media, or games.
  • Experience writing for online audiences
  • Proficiency with major social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.
  • An appreciation for word games and puzzles.
  • Basic experience with web production, and basic knowledge of web tools and interfaces.
  • Basic knowledge of journalism ethics and standards.
