Engineering Manager - Activation

Job Description

The New York Times is looking for an engineering manager to join the Activation Team in the Growth Mission.

About the Role

At the core of the business, your work will speak directly to our readers about the value of registering and subscribing to The New York Times. In this role, you will oversee the team that builds and optimizes the customer journey of newly registered users, encouraging them to foster deeper and more highly engaged relationships with our journalism and instill the habits and behaviors that increase their likelihood to become subscribers. This position reports to the Director of Engineering and requires collaboration across a range of functions including product, marketing, design, and data teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of software engineers of 4 or more direct reports.
  • Recruit for and retain extraordinary engineering talent and create an inclusive team culture.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop a diverse, inclusive, and equitable team by creating growth opportunities for the team of talented engineers of all levels and continue nurturing their development.
  • Work closely with product owners, project managers, and other partners to ensure we deliver a compelling user experience.
  • Participate in technical discussions and work cross-functionally to coordinate with other technology teams to create the right solutions, manage expectations, and keep strategies aligned.
  • Establish and carry out engineering norms that are customized for the team's needs.
  • Work with other managers throughout the organization on cross-team initiatives and projects.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1 or more years of experience managing a software engineering team on projects with technical depth and an understanding of full software development life cycle and agile team processes.
  • Experience with node.js, JavaScript, modern JS frameworks.
  • Track record of managing a team with complex engineering challenges while collaborating with functional partners.
  • Experience building an organizational culture focused on growth, innovation and creativity.
  • Passion for creating inclusive environments and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience growing, retaining and inspiring diverse and talent engineering teams.


This role is open to full-time remote and NYC based in-office employees.
