Primary Role

The Maintenance Worker/Relief Operator maintains and repairs machinery, equipment, physical structures, piping and other operating systems in water treatment and pumping facilities. Also works as a relief Operator or Treatment Operator in their absence. This position will support both Water and Wastewater.

Key Accountabilities

  • Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment
  • Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose a problem or repair machinery
  • Dismantles defective machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts
  • Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears and other parts of machinery
  • Installs and repairs monitoring and water quality equipment
  • Assembles, installs and maintains pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators and related equipment
  • Operates, monitors, adjusts and calibrates chemical feed systems
  • Operates and monitors all treatment facilities as needed
  • Maintains written and computer records of operation and maintenance activities
  • Attends Company training or outside training classes as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Advanced knowledge and related experience in the maintenance and repair of machinery, process control and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of safety concerns associated with electrical, electronic, machinery and chemical applications.
  • Have basic knowledge of electricity
  • Computer proficient and knowledgeable in operation and repair of process control and instrumentation systems
  • Learn the functioning of the overall pumping and water treatment and wastewater operation
  • Use judgment to make decisions to keep the system operating and follow established safety procedures
  • Use hands, eyes and fingers to adjust equipment, tighten or loosen bolts, screws or connectors
  • Work in confined spaces and be able to lift and carry items weighing over 50 lbs and climb in and out of vaults
  • Be physically able to use self-contained breathing apparatus and pass respiratory physical and hearing tests Requires mathematical development sufficient to be able to calculate surface, volume, weights and measures. Calculate square roots and variable formulas. Calculate plane and solid figures, circumference, area and volume.
  • Must have developed language skills to be able to read and interpret instructions and rules, researching information in reference sources, maintenance and procedural manuals
  • Computer literacy
  • Understanding and adherence to all material safety data sheet (SDS) information


  • 2 years of experience in machine and instrument maintenance and repair, including vocational education, apprentice training, in-plant training, on-the-job training or essential experience.
  • High school graduate or state-recognized educational equivalency certificate
  • Associate of Science degree preferred
  • Must have or obtain Grade I Iowa Water Treatment Operator's license within 18 months of being hired and obtain a Grade II Iowa Water Treatment Operator's license within 42 months of filling this position
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
