Job title: Sensory Research Assistant

Job Location: Hershey, PA

Summary:

Under general supervision by the Sensory Manager, provides full-time support for all sensory Discrimination, Shelf Life, and Employee Hedonic testing at both the Tech Center and 19 East facilities. Lead discrimination projects for CI or alternate supplier approvals.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to;
  • Scheduling Projects for Employee Testing (continuous improvements, shelf life, innovation, etc.)
  • Maintenance of project sample inventory: sample receipt, storage, and tracking for Sensory projects, move samples among temperature storage conditions as per department guidelines
  • Point person for maintenance of TC and 19E Sensory Laboratory (including supplies and equipment) and storage areas (incl. pantry, coolers, chambers and freezers).
  • Maintenance of testing supplies and incentives/snacks; conduct necessary grocery shopping (via peapod and in-store)
  • Sample preparation for employee testing program;
    • Discrimination Testing (i.e. 2 of 5, Paired Comparison, Duo-Trio, Triangle, etc.)
    • Employee acceptability (Innovation support and shelf life testing)
  • Work with project leaders to develop Eyequestion ballots in support of employee testing programs and run system reports (i.e. 2 of 5 testing).
  • Execute testing for all employee testing projects.
  • Manage projects for CI or alternate supplier approvals, including reporting.
  • Point person for out of SL ingredients/rework/WIP, arrange tastings, communicate results, and update spreadsheet.
  • Support to SCI Consumer test sample preparation and shipping to test sites


The individual will interact with other Sensory professionals (CPT Technician and Project Leaders) and other functions within the Tech Center such as Product Development, Lab Ops, Hershey's Kitchens, etc.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Prepare and execute employee testing: includes ballot creation, sample prep, test execution (TC or 19E facilities), etc. Issue reports.

Maintain Sensory lab and storage areas including management of equipment, test samples, panel treats, testing supply inventory, etc.

Miscellaneous: grocery shopping (peapod and in-store), shipping samples, etc.

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsiblities:

  • Strong Computer skills (intermediate knowledge of MS Office)
  • Be comfortable with operating lab equipment
  • Attention to detail
  • Good mathematical skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with large and diverse group of people
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize with limited supervision
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time
  • Ability to bend and climb on step stool or ladder
  • Ability to lift 50 pound cases of product
  • Valid driver's license


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:
  • B.S. degree
  • Bonus: Serve Safe certification


Experience:

  • Minimum 1-2 years of laboratory experience preferably working in food CPG or food service
