Job Title: Sensory Research Scientist

Job Location: Hershey, PA

Summary:

The Sensory Research Scientist will work independently and as part of a team to develop robust Descriptive Analysis capabilities across the organization by; 1) providing training, monitoring performance and providing feedback to the Professional panels, 2) executing collaborative studies, and 3) developing sensory lexicons/attributes for new product categories. This position will lead descriptive projects necessary to support research requests across business objectives (includes statistical analysis of data and reporting results (reports and presentations)).

The individual will apply knowledge of food systems, the human senses, and statistical models to plan and execute Discrimination and hedonic research methods in support of productivity improvements, shelf life testing and innovation. Responsibilities include consulting with internal clients, design and execution of test protocols, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.

The individual will interact extensively with Product Development, Research, Quality and Regulatory Compliance, Global Operations Technology with some exposure to Marketing and Marketing Research departments.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Build and maintain robust Descriptive Analysis (DA) Capabilities, includes panelist recruiting, screening and training to maintain panel capabilities and motivation. Also conduct collaborative studies with global satellites (U.S., China and Mexico).

Plan and execute Descriptive analysis projects in support of business needs including cost improvements, product optimization, innovation, plant troubleshooting and commodity testing (including data analysis and reporting).

Plan and execute Discrimination and hedonic research methods in support of productivity improvements, shelf life testing, innovation, plant troubleshooting and commodity testing (including data analysis and reporting).

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsiblities:

Computer skills (Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)

General knowledge of statistics and practical experience analyzing sensory and consumer acceptability data using Stat Graphics, SAS, R, etc.

Ability to interact effectively with large and diverse group of people

Ability to multi-task and prioritize with limited supervision

Excellent organizational and communication skills

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Food Science, Psychology, or Statistics with emphasis in Sensory Science.


Experience:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of applicable work experience with Sensory testing (sensory co-ops can be applied as relevant experience.
