Senior Scientist (R&D)

Primary Role

Reporting to Principal Scientist, the Senior Scientist will bring strong microbology skills, experienceleading projects, handling budgets andsecuringED funding.

The Senior Scientist solves complex problems relating to microbiology, wastewater treatment, and/or wastewater treatment and be responsible for:
  • C ontributing to and defining the research direction for their domain.
  • Actively contribute to the creation and maintenance of a research and innovation roadmap to support American Water'sexisting and anticipated business needs.
  • Leading projects with little or noguidance.
  • Partnering in the development of research plans and actively contribute in preparation of external research proposals.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert, alsocontributeing to providing operational support, prioritization of American Water'sresearch agenda, execution of laboratory, pilot and full-scale testing.
  • Adheres to research and technology standards and the governance framework set by leadership.
  • Collaborates with others to write and publish research reports and manuscripts in internal journals / externalpublications.

Key Accountabilities

  • Plans and executes research and innovation projects within one's own domain; maintain project budgets, and project cost control
  • Evaluates project progress and provides guidance as needed to others
  • Translates technical information and major findings of research projects into clear, comprehensive written research reports,
  • Publishes articles in peer-reviewed journals and presentations in national and local conferences.
  • Uses new technologies and approaches that can be used to improve business impact
  • Keeps abreast of latest trends and happenings in one's chosen domain and other domains
  • Looks for opportunities to drive partnerships and develop the innovation ecosystem
  • Contributes actively to the development of a research and innovation agenda
  • Partner with the operations as needed


  • A Masters (PhD preferred) in Environmental Science or Microbiology, and a proven track record of environmental microbiology research is required.
  • Candidate must have an established track record of publishing and acquiringfunding.
