OptumRx is seeking an experienced and dynamic Chief Pharmacy Officer to provide industry leadership for 5,000 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians across OptumRx. The candidate must have a cutting-edge view of what's happening within the managed care industry, particularly Managed Care Pharmacy, and strategically drive and promote OptumRx's industry leading Clinical PBM capabilities and status in the market.

Successful candidates will possess a deep understanding of the healthcare landscape, understanding the needs and interfacing routinely with all key constituents (payers, providers, employers, government, and consumers) and partnering successfully throughout UHG (Optum and UnitedHealthcare).

This executive may also have responsibility for several functions which support growth including:
  • Drug Intelligence
  • P&T Committee
  • Formulary Strategy
  • Pipeline and Drug Information
  • Utilization Management (UM) Policy Development

  • External Partnerships

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Strong connection to managed care pharmacy community in order to help proactively identify the greatest opportunities to impact our clients and consumers
  • As a strategic member of the leadership team, identify emerging issues in events or processes that impact company goals and develop strategies to resolve them, collaborating with other organizational areas as needed
  • Leverage new and existing resources throughout OptumRx and the broader Optum Enterprise to optimize OptumRx's clinical operational excellence, service delivery model and ultimately drive the highest possible level of client support and satisfaction
  • Lead with data and driven by results with an emphasis on building relationships within the industry
  • Help to identify and then drive development of new tools, programs and services that can meet current clinical needs in the industry and proactively address evolving changes in the market
  • Build and develop teams that can scale while delivering excellence; hire and develop members of the team and continue to mentor and grow the team
  • Support organizational growth and retention objectives through strategic leadership efforts to enhance new sales, prospecting, client retention and upsell activities
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills and abilities and develop those through candidate selection, effective onboarding and training, goal setting and mentorship as well as the ability to make course corrections when needed to get an individual or team back on track

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Pharmacy
  • Active, unrestricted Pharmacist license
  • 10+ years of managed care pharmacy experience
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible management experience in healthcare environment, most recently at the senior executive level
  • Demonstrated experience interfacing with leadership levels
  • Experience presenting and defending clinical programs / business cases to leadership
  • In-depth knowledge of the healthcare industry from both clinical and business perspectives
  • Proven ability to make judgments about the value of ideas, needs, and resources, and to effectively communicate the advantages and disadvantages of each to other decision makers
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proven ability to motivate others
  • Ability to travel up to 50%
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $250,000 to $300,000. The role is also eligible to participate in UHG's annual bonus and long-term incentive plans.
