Core Systems Engineer Function Owner (2021)

Automotive megatrends in the areas of software, electrification, mobility, and connectivity are causing OEMs to have increasing needs for features. To meet this, Nexteer is developing reusable core system designs and has a need for core systems engineers who become experts in the building blocks to support increasing feature content. The core systems engineer will work cross functionally with multiple internal teams (e.g., program managers, application, software, requirements, architecture, mechanical, validation) on the core design that will be used for applications. The ideal candidate has a multi-discipline understanding of software, electrical, and mechanical designs, along with systems engineering and project planning skills.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical leadership and review board representation for core system design
  • Update and optimize the system designs taking into account the varying / evolving customer needs in terms of features through the use of multi-disciplinary engineering
  • Responsible for core system requirements, design, testing, demonstration, implementation, and verification
  • Diagnosis of vehicle and bench performance issues through data-based root cause analysis
  • Interfaces with other Nexteer functional and application stakeholders to develop optimum implementation
  • Uses software rapid prototyping tools for concept development
  • Supports effort to improve reusability and configurability of core system functions
  • Support ISO-26262 safety assessments, occasional customer audits, and process updates
  • Assists in maintaining cost controls
  • Stays abreast of new technology, potentially representing Nexteer in industry


Required Skills:
  • Experience performing engineering simulations/calculations using MATLAB/Simulink
  • Enjoy both analytic and hands-on problem solving
  • Excellent problem solving techniques (i.e. Shainin Red X, Design for Six Sigma)
  • Enjoy driving, evaluating vehicles and possess a valid driver license
  • Excellent communication skills and a desire to work with people
  • High degree of organization, accuracy, and time management skills
  • Familiarity with automotive communication protocols (CAN, CAN FD, Flexray) and CAN tools
  • General systems engineering principles and processes
  • General controls knowledge


Preferred:
  • General competency in all core fields (mechanical, electronics, computer hardware and software)
  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics (steering, braking, suspension, driveline), mechanical systems, electronic systems, and computer hardware and software
  • Experience with C, C#, Python
  • Knowledge of model based systems engineering (MBSE), including Use Cases, Activity Diagrams, Interface Diagrams, Architecture Design Diagrams, Internal Design Diagrams
  • Knowledge of IBM Jazz suite, including DNG, RTC, Rhapsody, Architecture Management, RQM, Global Configuration
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools such as Simulink Embedded Coder and dSpace MicroAutoBox
  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics software tools such as CarSim/Carmaker
  • Electric power steering experience
  • Knowledge in DFMEA, ISO 26262, ASPICE


Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with 2 years experience in automotive systems
  • Master's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering


Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
