Senior Specialist IT Infrastructure - UNIX/Linux Operations

What You Will Do:
  • Must be recognized as a technical expert in UNIX/Linux platform engineering and operations. Position is responsible for high level systems administration, research, planning, design, and support of complex enterprise technologies.
  • Identifies requirements, builds, tests, deploys, and maintains consistent and stable UNIX/Linux operating environments for Abbott.
  • Provides technical oversight and partners with customers, vendors, and other dependent IT domains to ensure successful delivery and operations of the UNIX/Linux based systems that support Abbott business applications.
  • Leads technology specific tactical initiatives that encompass multiple technologies.
  • Ideal candidate is a self-starter with technical leadership experience in Enterprise UNIX/Linux operations and is technically proficient in multiple variants of UNIX/Linux (Redhat (RHEL), SUSE, HP-UX preferred).

Core Job Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert and provide consulting support to Division IT and end-user organizations for project and/or application migration efforts. Effectively identify user and technical dependencies, risks, and engage other technical domains to define broader solution sets.
  • Provide technical leadership in the development of UNIX/Linux best practices and standards, prepares recommendations, and secures approval of global deployment.
  • Install, configure, and maintain UNIX/Linux servers in a worldwide environment primarily consisting of Red hat/SUSE Linux, HP-UX and Oracle databases.
  • Implement stated infrastructure strategies for systems infrastructure using current and emerging technologies. Maintain and gain knowledge and competency in related UNIX/Linux technologies.
  • Conduct proactive capacity planning, performance monitoring, configuration tuning, and technology lifecycle as required to achieve optimum performance levels.
  • Manage and enhance system security in accordance with industry best practices and company policy.
  • Provide level 3 technical leadership.
  • Troubleshoot UNIX/Linux problems with hardware, operating systems, layered software products, and printing. Maintain knowledge and competency in related technologies.
  • Provide technical oversight and issue escalation for On Call operations. Responsible for evaluating outages, reviewing impact of supported systems, and troubleshooting incident resolutions.
  • Execute system change, incident, and problem analyses per established procedures. Coordinate major Unix-related change activities during maintenance windows.
  • Participate in the management of support contracts for hardware, operating system, layered products, and other software.
  • Implement disaster recovery planning and testing as required
  • Establish and maintain system specific documentation and operational procedures relative to UNIX/Linux based systems. Produce metrics as directed.
  • Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications with the following: employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.


Education and Experience you will bring:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, Business, or area of functional responsibility
  • 7+ years of technical experience with Unix/Linux based server operating systems administration in a medium to large complex server environment
  • 3+ years of level 3 experience with Systems Engineering (UNIX/RedHat/RHEL) and clustering technologies. RedHat Cluster and/or Oracle RAC experience preferred.
  • Expertise in administrating, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems.
  • 2-4 years of experience working with virtualization technologies including VMWare
  • 4-5 years of experience installing, configuring, and managing x86 based server hardware and virtual machines
  • Experience with infrastructure related concepts such as servers, network, storage area networks, backups, and datacenter management.
    • Moderate understanding of networking, IP addressing, DNS and TCP/IP.
    • Moderate understanding of VMware and the tuning and configuration
    • Moderate understanding of Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, LDAP
    • Moderate understanding of the architecture of large server backup systems
    • Moderate shell scripting skills with at least one scripting language (Bourne/ksh or perl)
    • Moderate understanding of storage area networks and shared storage technologies.
    • Working knowledge of logical volume management concepts and SAN configuration
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment
  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment while engaging others to accomplish projects. Demonstrates ability to handle technical challenges.
  • Strong verbal and written proficiency in the English language with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines in a timely manner

Supervisory responsibility:
  • Lead technical initiatives for UNIX/Linux in 2-3 person teams.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned which may include minimal travel.
