Staff Software Engineer

Job Description

The New York Times is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its Publishing Pipeline team. The team is reinventing the way digital content is published and consumed by our applications, and you can be a part of it.

Historically, the company has handled a large number of places where content is persisted, Content Management Systems that produce content, and APIs which distribute it to end clients. The team strives to greatly reduce the complexity of publishing and consuming NYT content by normalizing published content and providing simple, open and flexible ways to distribute content. Our platform is critical in enabling faster product development cycles and reducing architectural complexity in the organization.

Qualifications:
  • Good knowledge of Java/JVM and Kafka, streaming architectures in general
  • Experience/interest in Go, a huge plus
  • Experience in cloud-based deployments and services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or similar cloud platforms
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes for container and deployment orchestration
  • Expertise in building highly scalable and reliable distributed systems
  • Comfortable approaching unfamiliar languages and technologies
  • Experience with Linux, concepts of networking
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills


Your Responsibilities
  • Take on a wide range of technical tasks not limited to programming, such as working with Cloud services, platforms and APIs
  • Own delivery of large features and complete systems from technical design through production operation
  • Build and maintain scalable systems; lead the technical excellence of the system and creates plans to mitigate tech debt and outages
  • Translates feature requirements into architecture designs or test plans and specific engineering tasks
  • Assist other teams in integrating with the Publishing Pipeline
  • Actively grow other engineers through mentorship, coaching, and sponsorship
  • Collaborate with Project Management and Product Management and other professionals within your team and across the organization

This role is open to full-time remote and NYC Based in-office employees.

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
