  • Job Summary

  • Serve as in-house counsel supporting field operations primarily in New York and New Jersey .

    Legal support provided by this position will be focused primarily on moderate to complex commercial/business matters, although the position also will contribute to and interact with other staff as necessary on environmental and regulatory matters, health and safety issues, facility development and permitting, government and regulatory affairs, and real estate. The position also will manage commercial and regulatory litigation matters including the management of outside counsel.

    The attorney's office can be located within Waste Management's Greater Mid-Atlantic Are headquarters facility in Ewing, NJ, or in an additional office maintained by Waste Management's Legal Department in Newtown, Pennsylvania, just a few minutes' drive from Ewing, NJ.
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform satisfactorily the following non-exclusive list essential duties. Other minor duties may be assigned.
    • Provide proactive legal and practical business advice to internal Company management at the 'Market Area' or 'District' level including direct interaction with corporate subsidiary officers;
    • Assist in preparing, reviewing, and negotiating legal documents on the Company's behalf, including a variety of contracts and bid documents, and assist management in representing the organization in legal disputes and commercial transactions;
    • Provide general legal support to Company sales force including contract preparation, review, and enforcement, and customer service and customer relations issues;
    • Provide general legal support and advice to collection, disposal, recycling, and related field operations;
    • Conduct risk assessment in connection with customer, vendor, operations, industry and/or business issues, and advise management on appropriate responses or actions;
    • Manage outside counsel activities including determination of effective business and legal strategies to address litigation and/or other specific operational needs;
    • Advise Company personnel on corporate policies and procedures;
    • Ensure compliance with basic corporate formalities in the context of an enterprise consisting of numerous individual corporate entities;
    • Reinforce Company compliance culture and business principles including "success with integrity";
    • Interface with various departments and Company functions to work effectively and provide a high-level of service to our business partners.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises a paralegal located in the same office.
  • Qualifications

  • The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

    A. Education and Experience

    Juris Doctorate and four or more years of previous legal experience, including as in-house counsel, law firm practice, or governmental.

    B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

    New York and/or New Jersey State Bar Licensure

    C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

    Proficiency with basic office equipment, computer and phone technology.
